The Clippers sit second in the West after one game and jumped from 16th to 3rd in a week of power rankings. The figures behind that jump are real, but almost all of them come from a single night.

One rout is a data point, not a profile.
The 121-96 win over the Kings had Darius Garland at 30 points and Brook Lopez at 17 points and 11 rebounds. It shows what Garland can carry and that Lopez, at 38, can still give a starter's night. It does not prove the rotation works. The second seed and a pace that projects to 82-0 come from a sample of one game, so they are simple math and say nothing yet about quality.
Last season's baseline is a break-even team.
The Clippers went 42-40 last season with a 116.3 offensive rating, a 115.2 defensive rating and a net of 1.1, 16th in the league. Tonight's host, the Lakers, went 53-29 with a net of 1.5, and Luka Doncic averaged 33.5 points. The Lakers were only slightly better per possession, yet they won 11 more games. That says the Clippers' problem was closing out games more than overall talent, but it does not tell anyone how this new roster will finish.
November 8 is the date that matters most.
Brandon Ingram, Bradley Beal, Max Strus and their second-year backup center are all listed Out with return targets of November 8. Jordan Miller's target is March 2, 2027. Ingram led the team last season with 21.5 points over 77 games, and Strus shot 40.2% from three in just 12. Until they are back, the wing minutes go to Rui Hachimura, Derrick Jones Jr. and Kris Dunn. A target date is a projection, not a promise, and none of the five has seen his status change this week.
The money gives a cushion, but the draft picks do not.
Payroll is $188.9M, over the salary cap but under the $200.4M tax line, with Garland at $42.2M and Ingram at $40.0M. That leaves some room to take on salary without paying tax. It does not mean the team can buy its way into contention: the 2029 and 2030 firsts are gone, and the 2027 and 2028 firsts are only swaps. Any upgrade would have to be paid for with players, not picks.
When will Brandon Ingram return for the Clippers?
Ingram is listed Out with a right heel issue and a target return of November 8. He has been doing on-court work since October 15, but his debut date has not been confirmed.
Are the Clippers over the luxury tax in 2026-27?
No. Payroll is $188.9M, which is over the salary cap but below the $200.4M luxury tax line.
