Grizzlies Open at Golden State With a Rebuilt Roster and Four Road Games First
The Memphis Grizzlies open the 2026-27 regular season on October 23 at Golden State. Ja Morant, Santi Aldama, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Walter Clayton Jr. are gone, and the roster leans on Jerami Grant, Cam Spencer, Cedric Coward, Zach Edey and three rookies. Last season ended 25-57, and Memphis won four of its last five tune-up games.

The regular season starts October 23 at Golden State. It is the first of four straight road games. Memphis goes to Sacramento on October 25 and to Utah on October 26, a back-to-back. It then visits Portland on October 29. The first home game at FedExForum is October 31 against Sacramento. That means a second meeting with the Kings in six days. The schedule has 80 regular-season games, and four of them are on national TV. The Grizzlies come in after a strong run of tune-up games. They beat Atlanta 132-123 and Chicago 104-100 on the road, and Charlotte 116-98 and Utah 123-103 at home. The only loss in that stretch was 122-118 to Orlando on October 7.
02Who leftThe roster turned over a lot.
The roster turned over a lot. Ja Morant is now with the Trail Blazers, so Memphis sees him on October 29 in Portland. Santi Aldama went to the Mavericks. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Rayan Rupert are with the 76ers. Walter Clayton Jr. was waived on October 19 and has agreed to a two-way deal with Dallas. Earlier reports said Memphis tried to trade him and that the Kings might be interested. Marc Stein then reported that the Mavs were likely to sign him. Toby Okani, Dariq Whitehead, Tyler Burton and Lawson Lovering are also off the roster and are unsigned. Of all those exits, Morant's is the one that changes the most about how this team will look.

Jerami Grant is the veteran anchor. He is 32 and in his 12th season. Last season he averaged 18.6 points in 29.7 minutes over 57 games and shot 38.9 percent from three. Ty Jerome scored 19.7 points a game last season, but he played only 15 games. Cedric Coward put up 13.6 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 62 games as a rookie. Jaylen Wells added 12.5 points in 69 games. GG Jackson also averaged 12.5 points, in 55 games. Cam Spencer ran the offense with 5.6 assists and shot 44.9 percent from three across 72 games. Spencer and Jerome are the two best ball handlers left on this roster.

That was the best mark among the team's top players. On October 20 the front office picked up his option for 2027-28, and it did the same for Coward. Isaiah Stewart gives Memphis a second big. Last season he averaged 10.0 points and 5.0 rebounds in 58 games. Stewart is out with a left ankle and leg injury. His estimated return is October 23, the day of the opener. Quinten Post and rookie Carson Cooper give the team more size behind them.

Mashack had a rough rookie year, with 6.2 points a game and a -6.8 plus-minus over 31 games. The bigger problem last season was defense. Memphis had an offensive rating of 112.4 and a defensive rating of 118.4, a net rating of -6.0. The team played fast, with a pace of 101.7, and scored 114.7 points per game. That added up to a 25-57 record. With this many new faces, the defense is the first thing to watch.
