Knicks Enter 2026-27 at 0-0 With Brunson, Diawara Day-to-Day
newsroom · 2 h agoThe Knicks are 0-0 heading into the 2026-27 season, with the regular-season opener set for Oct. 20 against Philadelphia on NBC/Peacock. Jalen Brunson and Mohamed Diawara are both listed day-to-day, each with an estimated return of Oct. 1. New York is coming off a 53-29 season and now has to replace departed center Mitchell Robinson, who is with the Celtics.
The Offseason Departure
Mitchell Robinson is no longer with the Knicks. The brief lists him as departed since last season, now with the Boston Celtics. That leaves Andre Drummond as the veteran center on the roster, with Karl-Anthony Towns listed at center-forward. New York's frontcourt now runs through Towns and Drummond, with Mohamed Diawara also on the roster as a forward. The full roster for 2026-27 includes guards Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby, Josh Hart, Miles McBride, Jordan Clarkson, Jose Alvarado, Landry Shamet and Tyler Kolek, plus Kevin McCullar Jr., Pacôme Dadiet, Dillon Jones, Jack Kayil and Tyler Nickel. Brunson remains the starting point guard and the central figure on the roster heading into training camp.
Injury Report
Two Knicks are banged up before the season even starts. Jalen Brunson is day-to-day with a left wrist and arm issue, with an estimated return date of Oct. 1, 2026. Mohamed Diawara is also day-to-day, dealing with a finger and arm injury, also with an estimated return of Oct. 1. Both timelines point to Brunson and Diawara being ready before the preseason slate wraps up in mid-October and well ahead of the regular-season opener on Oct. 20 against Philadelphia. No other injuries appear in the report at this point in the offseason.
Last Season By The Numbers
New York finished 2025-26 at 53-29. The team posted a 118.7 offensive rating and a 112.3 defensive rating, for a net rating of 6.4. The Knicks scored 116.5 points per game, shot 55.7% effective field goal and 59.0% true shooting, and played at a pace of 97.7. Jalen Brunson led the way, averaging 26.0 points, 6.8 assists and 3.3 rebounds over 74 games, shooting 36.9% from three. Karl-Anthony Towns averaged 20.1 points and 11.9 rebounds, and OG Anunoby added 16.7 points on 38.6% three-point shooting. Mikal Bridges played all 82 games and averaged 14.4 points, while Josh Hart posted 12.0 points, 7.4 rebounds and 4.8 assists.
The Schedule Ahead
The Knicks open preseason on the road at Philadelphia on Oct. 5, then host Washington on Oct. 8 and Minnesota on Oct. 12, before a back-to-back with Toronto on Oct. 13 on the road and Oct. 15 at home. The regular-season opener is set for Oct. 20 against Philadelphia, airing on NBC/Peacock. New York has 80 games on its regular-season schedule this year, with 42 of them slated for national television. Since none of those games have been played yet, the Knicks' record sits at 0-0 and no seed is attached to the team.
Rumor Mill
The rumor file is thin for now. A Sept. 5 Eastern Notes roundup carried the headline 'Knicks Extension Candidates, Brink, Pacers Roster, Bucks Minicamp,' grouping Knicks extension chatter together with other Eastern Conference items. The brief does not name a specific Knicks player, contract number, or timeline tied to that extension talk, so nothing is confirmed. Until a specific report attaches a name and terms, any extension buzz around the Knicks should be read as an early-September notes item, not a done deal.
Season Outlook
New York enters 2026-27 off a 53-29 season and the offensive and defensive numbers to go with it: a 118.7 ORtg, a 112.3 DRtg, and a net rating of 6.4. The core group returns. Brunson, Towns, Bridges, Anunoby and Hart all played major roles last season and remain on the roster. The Knicks have not played a regular-season game yet in 2026-27, so the record stands at 0-0. The opener against Philadelphia on Oct. 20 kicks off the year, with five preseason games first. How Brunson and Diawara look after their day-to-day injury designations will be an early camp storyline.
