The Kings open the 2026-27 regular season on Oct. 23 against Portland at Golden 1 Center. They lost every preseason game. Ben Simmons is out with an Achilles injury, Maxime Raynaud and Dylan Cardwell are out until Nov. 2, and Malik Monk is day-to-day with a left ankle injury.

Sacramento did not win an exhibition game. The early losses were close. The Kings fell 110-114 at the Lakers on Oct. 8 and 106-111 at Golden State on Oct. 10. After that, the margins grew. Portland won 98-110 in Sacramento on Oct. 13. San Antonio won 97-126 on Oct. 16. The Clippers closed the preseason with a 96-121 win on Oct. 21. The scoring dropped every time out: 110, then 106, then 98, 97 and 96. Preseason results don't count in the standings, but a trend like that is hard to wave off. The opener is a rematch with Portland, the team that beat the Kings at home a week ago. The front office and the coaching staff have one day to find answers before the games count.
02The injury report: Simmons, Raynaud, Cardwell and MonkBen Simmons is out with an Achilles injury.
Ben Simmons is out with an Achilles injury. His estimated return is Oct. 1, 2027, which is past the end of this season. A report on Oct. 18 said he is believed to have torn the Achilles. Simmons is 30 and in his 8th season. Maxime Raynaud is out with a right knee injury. Dylan Cardwell is out with a left calf injury. Both have an estimated return of Nov. 2, so both are expected to miss the first stretch of the schedule, from the opener through the Oct. 31 game at Memphis. Malik Monk is day-to-day with a left ankle injury. His estimated return is Oct. 23, the day of the opener. Whether Monk plays against Portland is the biggest lineup question for game night.

Zach LaVine was the top scorer among current Kings last season at 19.2 points per game, with a 39.0 three-point percentage in 39 games. Domantas Sabonis averaged 15.8 points, 11.4 rebounds and 4.1 assists last season, but he played only 19 games. Keegan Murray averaged 14.0 points and 5.7 rebounds in 23 games. De'Andre Hunter scored 13.7 points per game in 45 games, and his plus-minus of -0.5 was the best among the team's top players. With Raynaud and Cardwell out, the frontcourt minutes behind Sabonis fall to Precious Achiuwa, who averaged 10.1 points and 6.7 rebounds in 73 games last season, plus Jonathan Mogbo and rookie Alex Karaban. The roster also has rookie guards Darius Acuff Jr., who is 19, and Emanuel Sharp, who is 22.

Several familiar names are gone. DeMar DeRozan is now with the Nuggets. Devin Carter is now with the Celtics. Isaiah Stevens and Drew Eubanks are unsigned free agents. The Kings also trimmed the roster before the opener. Per reports, they waived Viktor Lakhin, Tristen Newton and Elfrid Payton on Oct. 17, then released two-way player Adam Flagler on Oct. 19. Also on Oct. 19, a report said the Grizzlies are looking to trade Clayton and the Kings may be interested. That is a rumor, and nothing has happened. Sacramento also shows up in Fischer's latest notes from Oct. 22. Until a deal is announced, the roster is the one that takes the floor against Portland: 16 players, with Simmons, Raynaud and Cardwell out.
