The roster has changed a lot: Tyler Herro, Norman Powell, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel'el Ware and Kasparas Jakucionis are gone, and Giannis Antetokounmpo now plays next to Bam Adebayo. Vladislav Goldin is day-to-day with an ankle issue.

The Heat are 0-0 for a few more hours. The opener is tonight, October 21, at Kaseya Center against Minnesota, and ESPN has the game. Miami already saw this opponent in the preseason. On October 10 the Heat lost to Minnesota 124-125, their closer loss of the exhibition schedule. The one name on the injury report is Vladislav Goldin. The second-year center is listed as day-to-day with an ankle and leg issue, and his estimated return date is October 21, the day of the opener. Watch his status close to tip-off. Goldin is one of three centers on the roster, along with Bam Adebayo and Nick Richards. That gives the Heat some cover in the frontcourt if he sits.

The roster that ended last season is not the one taking the floor tonight. Five players are gone. Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel'el Ware and Kasparas Jakucionis are now with the Bucks. Norman Powell is now with the Bulls. Giannis Antetokounmpo, 31, wears No. 7 for Miami. He joins Adebayo, Andrew Wiggins, Bobby Portis Jr., Davion Mitchell, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Klay Thompson. At 36 and in his 15th season, Thompson is the oldest player on the team. Ryan Conwell and Tre Donaldson are the two rookies. The front office kept trimming this week. The Heat waived four players on October 17, and per Ira Winderman, Nick Richards' 2026-27 salary became guaranteed today.

Adebayo is the anchor. Last season he averaged 20.1 points and 10.0 rebounds in 73 games, with a team-best plus-minus of +4.5 among the top players. He shot 31.8 percent from three. Antetokounmpo played only 36 games last season. In those games he averaged 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds and 5.4 assists in 28.9 minutes. Wiggins scored 15.4 points a night and hit 41.4 percent from deep. Hardaway played all 80 of his games off a 26.6-minute workload, scoring 13.5 points on 40.7 percent from three. Mitchell ran the offense with 6.5 assists per game. Portis made 45.6 percent of his threes and scored 13.7 points, but his plus-minus was -4.0. Pelle Larsson added 11.4 points in 70 games.

They played fast, with a pace of 104.2, and scored 120.9 points per game. Their effective field goal percentage was 54.2 and their true shooting percentage was 58.0. That team leaned on Herro, Powell and Jaquez, and all three are gone now. The question this season is simple. Can a frontcourt built around Antetokounmpo and Adebayo, with Wiggins, Thompson and Hardaway spacing the floor, push that net rating higher? The shooters who stayed hit well from three last season. The volume has to come from somewhere new.

Miami won three of its five tune-up games. The Heat beat Toronto 129-105 on the road, beat New Orleans 128-118 and scored 144 against Brooklyn in a 144-128 win. They lost to Minnesota 124-125 and closed with a 115-136 loss at Orlando on October 16. The first week of the regular season moves fast. After tonight's opener, the Heat host Detroit on October 23. Then they play at Charlotte on October 24, the first back-to-back of the year. Dallas comes to Kaseya Center on October 26, on NBA TV, and Miami visits Atlanta on October 28. The full schedule has 80 regular-season games, and 31 of them are on national TV.
