Heat Hit Charlotte With Numbers That Demand Answers

Two lopsided home losses, one superstar carrying the load, and a roster paid like a contender.

0-2Miami's record entering Charlotte

Miami is 0-2 and 13th in the East after losing by 25 and then by 17. Charlotte is the first chance to turn a loud scoring night from Giannis Antetokounmpo into something that counts.

0-2: Miami's record entering Charlotte

Margin of defeat

Miami lost 106-131 to Minnesota, then 111-128 to Detroit. Against the Pistons the Heat never led, and they trailed by as many as 23. Detroit ran off an 11-0 burst in the opening minutes and a 10-0 burst late in the third. That says the defense is not holding up when games open. It does not prove the season is lost after two games.

One man's night

Antetokounmpo put up 36 points and 12 rebounds on 15-of-26 shooting. He was still minus-23 in 33 minutes. Davion Mitchell was minus-24 and Bam Adebayo minus-22. Individual production is there. Wins are not, and the numbers do not show Giannis is the problem.

Thin support

The starters produced 72 points against Detroit and the reserves 31. Klay Thompson went 2-of-11 from three, Andrew Wiggins 3-of-12 overall, Pelle Larsson 1-of-7. Simone Fontecchio's 70.8% true shooting over his last 10 games is the lone efficient reserve number, and it is a thin sample. Larsson is day-to-day with a finger injury, so even that rotation is unsettled.

Paying for this

Payroll sits at $206.9M, above the $200.4M threshold. Antetokounmpo earns $58.5M and Adebayo $49.8M. Miami's 2027 first is protected to Charlotte and the 2028 first is conditional to Charlotte. The cost is real, and the Heat are 29th in the power rankings. Two games do not prove the build is wrong, but they do not defend it either.

Charlotte test

The Hornets are 1-1 and went 44-38 last season with a plus-4.9 net rating, against Miami's plus-2.1. Kon Knueppel, Coby White and Grant Williams are all out. Charlotte has had two days of rest to Miami's one. That is a beatable opponent with no excuses attached. Win in Charlotte or the 0-2 start becomes a bigger problem.

What is the Heat's record after two games?

Miami is 0-2 and sits 13th in the East after losses to Minnesota and Detroit.

Who is out for Charlotte against the Heat?

Kon Knueppel, Coby White and Grant Williams are out for the Hornets. Christian Anderson is day-to-day, and Kylan Boswell is also out.
