The Knicks lost 107-103 in Boston, their second straight defeat to start the season. Jayson Tatum scored 36, and OG Anunoby's 20 points, 10 boards and 8 assists could not steal it.

36: Tatum points in Boston

Four Points Short

The Celtics beat New York 107-103 on Prime Video. Tatum ran the night with 36 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists. Three days earlier the 76ers won 106-100 on banner night. That makes two games and two losses by a combined ten points. Close is not a result. The champions are 0-2.

Fast Start, Wasted

The first quarter looked like the Knicks. Towns hit his first three shots, a three among them, and had 8 points in eight minutes. Miles McBride hit two free throws with 3:56 left in the first to make it 21-16, and New York led by as many as five. Then Sam Hauser hit a three to cut it to 21-19, and Boston kept coming. Landry Shamet was +4 in four early minutes off the bench. Mikal Bridges went 0-2 from deep in his first four minutes and was -1. A five-point lead early in the first means nothing in the box score at the end.

The Grades

Anunoby, A-minus: he led New York with 20 points, 10 rebounds and 8 assists, and he did it on a night the offense needed someone to do everything. Towns, B: a perfect 3-3 start and the aggression Brown has been asking for, but a hot first quarter has to carry into the fourth. Hart, C: 0-3 from three in his first eight minutes, with 2 assists and a steal to soften it. Boston's misses don't let him off the hook, and his own shooting can't keep being the story.

Where It Leaves Them

New York sits 14th in the East. Miami is half a game ahead in 10th at 0-1, and Boston is one game ahead in sixth at 1-1. There are 80 games left, so the table is not the alarm. The schedule is. After two days off the Knicks host Orlando on Oct. 25 and Detroit on Oct. 27, play at Chicago the next night, then visit Philadelphia on Oct. 30 in an NBA Cup game.

Bottom Line

The front office is already making moves at the edges. ESPN and the New York Post reported that Dalton Knecht is joining on a two-way deal. A two-way contract does not fix a team that is 0-2. Mike Brown's group has led early twice and lost late twice. Orlando comes to the Garden, and anything but a win is a real problem.
