The lights come up tonight on the season's first Battle of L.A., and the Lakers walk in 1-0 after a 127-105 rout of the Warriors. Before Collin Sexton's debut and Tyronn Lue's short-handed Clippers take the stage, here are the numbers carrying the plot, and where each one runs out.

A Trailer, Not the Film
Doncic scored 28 and Walker Kessler 26 in a 22-point win over Golden State. After that, the weekly power rankings lifted the Lakers nine places, to 5th. The talent is real. The evidence is one night. A 1-0 record technically paces to 82-0, which says nothing about April. Kessler's 26 also sit on a thin resume: he played just five games last season, averaging 14.4 points and 10.8 rebounds. The opener showed what the Doncic-Kessler pairing can do. It has not yet shown what that pairing does across a full month.
The Hole in the Script
Last season's 53-29 record came with a net rating of 1.5, 14th in the league. The offense ranked 10th and the defense 19th. That gap suggests the 2025-26 Lakers won more games than their margins earned, and that defense was the weak spot. Silver Screen and Roll reported that Doncic called the Warriors game a great defensive effort. One good night doesn't cancel a season of evidence. Tonight's test comes against a Clippers team without Brandon Ingram, who scored 21.5 points a game last season, and also without Bradley Beal and Max Strus.
Nine Hundred Thousand Over
Payroll stands at $201.3 million, $0.9 million above the $200.4 million luxury tax line, with Doncic at $49.8 million and Austin Reaves at $41.2 million. Every addition now costs tax dollars, but the roster is not frozen: the first tax apron sits at $209.0 million. The cheaper help may come from inside. Collin Sexton, cleared Oct. 22 from a right calf injury, shot 40.1 percent from three while scoring 15.4 points a game last season. That is bench scoring the Lakers played the opener without. It does not yet show how he fits next to Doncic. Jake LaRavia, Adou Thiero and Cameron Carr are all out, with Oct. 25 targeted for their return.
Is Collin Sexton playing for the Lakers against the Clippers?
Silver Screen and Roll reported that Sexton will make his Lakers debut against the Clippers. He was cleared from his right calf injury on Oct. 22.
Are the Lakers over the luxury tax in 2026-27?
Yes. Payroll is $201.3 million, about $0.9 million above the $200.4 million luxury tax line.
