Can Orlando Hold Its Ground Until Banchero Is Back?

The Magic are 0-2 and without their top scorer for weeks. The answer depends on the shooters around him.

By the Magic Nightly Desk · Sunday, October 25

Orlando is 0-2 and will be without Paolo Banchero for at least a month, by his own estimate. The Magic can stay in range of the East pack, but only if Desmond Bane and Jalen Suggs start hitting shots.

Losing Banchero hurts, but it did not start the slide.

Banchero scored 23 in the 125-132 loss to Atlanta, so Orlando was already 0-1 with its best scorer on the floor. That game was lost on defense: the Magic gave up 132. Then he tweaked his ankle in the first quarter against Minnesota, and the team scored 93. Banchero told the Orlando Sentinel's Jason Beede he could miss at least a month with a low-grade high ankle sprain. The club's estimated return is 2026-11-22.

The case for patience rests on a young core and a decent preseason.

Before the standings counted, Orlando won three of four, including 136-115 over Miami. Franz Wagner is healthy again and scored 18 against Minnesota. Wendell Carter Jr. added 20. Tristan da Silva and Jase Richardson have both had their options picked up, according to Jason Beede's report, and both are in the rotation. This is a stretch where those players can show they are ready for bigger roles. Orlando is 11th in the East, only 1.5 games behind sixth-place Washington.

The case for worry is that the supporting shooters have not shown up.

Bane, on $39.4M, shot 21.1 percent from three in the first two games. Suggs, at $32.4M, is at 37.2 percent true shooting over five games, and the next stretch will show whether that is a slump or a shift. Isaac has flipped between out and day-to-day four times since October 20, and Penda and Nelson are both listed out until 2026-11-18. Black is questionable tonight. The roster is above the first apron at $218.1M, well past the $200.4M tax line, so this group has little room to be patched from outside.

The answer: Orlando can stay close, but only if the paid shooters carry the load.

The schedule helps early. Two games at Toronto come next, then Boston and Washington at home. Isaac could be back as soon as October 28. Wins in that window would matter more than the 0-2 start suggests, with 80 games left. But the Magic cannot lean on role players to fill a 24-point gap. Wagner is the clear lead option for now, and Bane and Suggs have to turn their salaries into shot-making. If they do, the Magic get Banchero back at a manageable deficit. If they do not, the question changes from how long he is out to whether this roster is built for the pressure of the cap.

How long will Paolo Banchero be out?

Banchero said he could miss at least a month with a low-grade high ankle sprain, and the club's estimated return is 2026-11-22. ESPN reported, citing sources, that he would be out multiple weeks.

Who scores for the Magic while Banchero is out?

Franz Wagner and Wendell Carter Jr. led the way against Minnesota with 18 and 20 points. Desmond Bane and Jalen Suggs have to shoot better to take pressure off them.
