Five games in, the Spurs look sound at both ends and thin behind the first unit.

San Antonio is 3-2, sixth in the West, and brings three straight wins into Saturday's home game with Minnesota. Through five games the numbers show a balanced team that leans heavily on its starters.

Is a 6.0 net rating through five games real?

The Spurs score 114.1 points per 100 possessions and allow 108.1. The Spot Up Shot noted that both marks rank in the top ten, as they did a year ago. That fits who this team is. It does not settle anything. Two of the five games were losses, to the Thunder and the Rockets. Two of the three wins came against the Kings and a Jazz team playing without Jaren Jackson Jr. and Lauri Markkanen.

How much is Wembanyama carrying?

He is averaging 25.0 points and 11.4 rebounds in 32.1 minutes. In Utah he scored 36, grabbed 14 rebounds and committed no turnovers in 39 minutes, and he finished plus-14. By The Spot Up Shot's count, 56 percent of his points have come in the paint. He is shooting 27.6 percent from three. As long as he keeps scoring inside at that rate, the outside misses cost the Spurs little.

Why did the bench score only 16 in Utah?

The starters scored 98 of the 117 points. Keldon Johnson added 9 on 4-of-7 shooting, Champagnie had 6, and Luke Kornet was minus-8 in 14 minutes, the worst mark on the team. Four starters played at least 37 minutes on the second night of a back-to-back. Tobias Harris is sidelined by a calf injury and Jayden Quaintance is not projected back until December 3, so the rotation is short. One night does not condemn the reserves.

What does Dylan Harper's 4-for-17 night tell us?

Less than it looks. Harper is averaging 17.2 points and 4.6 assists over five games, and he still had eight assists in Utah while missing shots. Castle also had eight assists, with 14 points. The narrower point comes from The Spot Up Shot, which reported that Champagnie replaced Harper for the final possession of regulation. That bears watching in close games. It says nothing about his scoring.

Does a 49-33 pace mean anything yet?

It is simple arithmetic on a 3-2 start with 77 games left. The Spurs are sixth and one game ahead of 11th, and Golden State is tenth at 2-3. Three of the next four are at home: Minnesota, Utah on November 2 and Dallas on November 4. Then comes a trip to Sacramento for an NBA Cup game. The pace proves nothing. The cushion above the play-in line is one game.

The verdictThe Spurs are defending and scoring like a top-ten team, and Wembanyama is carrying a heavy load efficiently. Until Harris returns, the bench's production is the number to watch.
What is the Spurs' record so far in 2026-27?

The Spurs are 3-2 and sixth in the West, with a three-game winning streak.

When is Tobias Harris expected back for the Spurs?

Harris is sidelined by a calf injury and projected to return October 31, when the Spurs host Minnesota.
