The Big Question: Keep This Bucks Group Together, or Deal Again?

At 1-4, with swapped picks and about $9 million under the tax, Milwaukee has to decide what this roster is.

By the Bucks Nightly Desk · Saturday, October 31

Five games into a rebuilt season, the Bucks are 1-4 and sit 13th, and trade talk has followed them since summer. The case for patience is stronger than the record, because Milwaukee's own first-round picks are tied up in swaps through 2030.

Last season

The old era ended at 32-50. The offense ranked 24th in the league, the defense 26th, and the net rating was minus-6.1. Milwaukee missed the playoffs for the first time since 2016-17. Doc Rivers resigned, and on April 30 the Bucks hired Taylor Jenkins, who came up on Mike Budenholzer's staff here in 2018-19 before building his name in Memphis.

June 23

The franchise turned the page in one night. Antetokounmpo and Portis went to Miami for Tyler Herro, Jaquez, Kel'el Ware and Jakucionis, and the same draft brought Brayden Burries at 10th and Nate Ament at 13th. Myles Turner came over from the Pacers on cap room cleared by stretching Damian Lillard's contract. Fans still argue over the return, and that argument is why this question exists at all.

October 19-24

The trade talk never settled. Milwaukee cut Kevin Porter Jr. on October 19, and five days later a report said the Bucks had turned down a potential Porter trade with the Nuggets, with no terms given. On October 21, a report placed the Bucks among the teams the Warriors contacted about Porzingis. Jake Fischer had already named Milwaukee among clubs exploring trades. None of it has gone further.

This week

The case for patience: over five games Herro is scoring 23.4 a night, Jaquez is adding 17.8 with 7.2 boards, and Ware is giving 11.8 and 8.4 in 18.8 minutes. The case against: a 106.8 offensive rating against 117.4 allowed, a 132-100 home loss to Houston, and a pace that projects to 16-66. Payroll is $191.4 million against a $200.4 million tax line, which leaves room to listen.

October 31

The answer is to keep it. Milwaukee's first-round picks from 2027 through 2030 are swaps and the 2030 second is owed to Orlando, so a teardown would not deliver a clean high pick. Herro, Jaquez, Ware, Jakucionis, Burries and Ament are all 26 or younger. Five games is too thin a sample to judge a roster built in June. Jenkins needs the season to find out what he has.

Next Cleveland visits Fiserv Forum tonight, then the Bucks go to Minnesota on November 2 and Boston on November 4.
Are the Bucks trading for Porzingis?

Nothing is done. A report said the Warriors contacted the Bucks and other teams about Porzingis on October 21, and nothing more has been reported since.

Did the Bucks turn down a Kevin Porter Jr. trade?

A report on October 24 said Milwaukee turned down a potential Porter trade with the Nuggets, five days after cutting him. No terms were reported.
