The Cavaliers open 2026-27 tonight in Philadelphia against a 76ers team that now includes LeBron James, the Akron native who delivered the franchise's only title. The archives say openers and Oct. 22 results predict little, but they say plenty about what this 52-30 core still has to prove.

How strange is it to open against LeBron James?

It's strange, and it fits. Cleveland took him No. 1 in 2003, reached its first Finals with him in 2007 and won the 2016 title with him after trailing 3-1, something no team had done before in the Finals. He left in 2010 and again in 2018. Tonight he wears Philadelphia's colors after averaging 20.9 points and 7.2 assists in 60 games last season. Respect the history, then guard him like anybody else.

What has Oct. 22 meant for the Cavs before?

They're 2-4 in six games on this date. The first was a 110-140 loss at San Diego in 1970, during a debut season that opened with 15 straight losses. In 1976, months after the Miracle at Richfield, they beat Chicago 106-95. The best came in 2022, a 128-96 win at Chicago. The calendar doesn't score points, but the range shows how far this franchise has come.

Does a bad start sink a season?

Not by itself, and the franchise has both extremes on record. The 1970 expansion team lost its first 15. In November 2024, Cleveland opened 15-0, tying its second-best start ever, before Boston ended the run. Neither start settled anything in the spring. Tonight the Cavs bring eight days of rest against a Sixers team that is already 1-0 and had one day off. Fresh legs are the edge, so use them.

Can the frontcourt hold up without full health?

Jarrett Allen's right knee put him on the injury report this week, and tonight is his target return date. Khalifa Diop is out with left knee trouble and is targeted for the Oct. 24 home game against the Nets. Hoops Rumors reported Nae'Qwan Tomlin will miss at least three to four weeks because of his back. Evan Mobley, who averaged 9.0 rebounds last season, carries the paint either way, with Thomas Bryant and Ernest Udeh Jr. behind him.

Is this core built like the 1992 team or the 2016 one?

So far it looks more like 1992. The Price-Daugherty-Nance teams under Lenny Wilkens peaked at 57 wins and reached the 1992 conference finals. This group won 52 last season with the league's sixth-best offense, a defense that ranked 15th and a plus-4.1 net rating. Mitchell and Harden can score with anybody. Unless Mobley and Allen drag that defense up the rankings, the ceiling looks more like 1992 than 2016.

The verdictHistory gives Cleveland a strange opening night, not a script. Beat LeBron's new team, get Allen back on the floor, and start writing a better chapter than the one from 1992.
When do the Cavaliers open the 2026-27 season?

Tonight, Oct. 22, in Philadelphia, with the game on ESPN. The first home game is Oct. 24 against the Nets.

How many championships have the Cavaliers won?

One, in 2016, when they came back from a 3-1 Finals deficit against Golden State. They have also won five Eastern Conference titles.
