How does a team lose a 29-point lead?

Cleveland lost it by scoring 37 points after halftime while Philadelphia scored 69. The Cavs led 69-40 with 49 seconds left in the second quarter. Then they gave up a 16-0 run that carried into the third, and a 15-0 run in the fourth that flipped 95-89 into 95-104. They scored 21 points in the third and 16 in the fourth. That is not bad luck. It is also one night, and it was opening night.

Where did the bench go?

The starters scored 88 points and the reserves scored 18. Mario Hezonja had 10 of those on 5-of-13 shooting, 0-for-5 from deep, and Sam Merrill added five. Still, Merrill and Jaylon Tyson were each plus-5 in 24 minutes, the best marks on the team. The reserves did not lose this game. The scoring gap says the second unit needs a shooter who makes shots. It does not say Atkinson's rotation is broken.

Who has to clean up the turnovers?

James Harden had six, Donovan Mitchell five and Peyton Watson five, so three players gave it away 16 times. Watson's first game in wine and gold went 2-of-7 with a team-worst minus-19 in 30 minutes. Fear The Sword graded it a tough debut. Harden scored 10 points in the fourth, so he is not the whole problem. Watson hit 41.1 percent of his threes last season, and one ugly night does not erase that.

Should Brooklyn worry anyone?

Brooklyn went 20-62 last season with a net rating of minus-10.0. Cleveland went 52-30 at plus-4.1. That is a gap of more than 14 points per 100 possessions. The Nets still have scorers: Julius Randle averaged 21.1 points and Michael Porter Jr. 24.2, and Brooklyn is also 0-1. Last season's gap guarantees nothing, but losing this one at home would be much harder to explain than Philadelphia.

What is $209.0 million buying?

It buys a roster $8.6 million over the tax threshold. Mobley and Mitchell make $50.1 million apiece, Harden $30.6 million and Allen $28.0 million. The 2027, 2028 and 2029 first-round picks are all swaps, and the 2030 first is the only one Cleveland fully owns. This is a team built to win now. The payroll does not prove it can win, only that there is little room left to spend on a fix.

The verdictOne collapse does not define an 82-game season, but 37 second-half points and 18 bench points are real problems. Saturday against Brooklyn is where Cleveland starts answering for them.
Why did the Cavs lose to the 76ers after leading by 29?

Cleveland scored 37 points in the second half while Philadelphia scored 69, including a 15-0 run in the fourth quarter. The Sixers won 114-106.

When do the Cavaliers play the Nets?

Cleveland hosts Brooklyn on October 24, 2026. It is the Cavs' first home game of the 2026-27 season, after a 0-1 start.
