The Beat Argues Brown and Tatum; Boston's Facts Argue Rotation

Outlets chase the feud and the Pritchard story; the roster facts support only part of either.

By the Celtics Nightly Desk · Monday, October 26

Coverage this week splits among the Brown-Tatum exchange, Payton Pritchard's role and what Joe Mazzulla's rotation shows. Boston's own record, 1-1 and eighth in the East, supports the third far better than the first.

The Brown-Tatum exchange is a story about two men, not about this roster.

ESPN reported that Jaylen Brown, now with the 76ers, claims no beef but says Tatum has a "hell of a PR team." Boston.com reported that Joe Mazzulla weighed in, and MassLive's Matt Vautour wrote that Brown's shots were petty. Boston.com also carried Blake Griffin's view of the rift. The roster facts are narrow. Brown left in the trade that brought Paul George and picks, and Tatum scored 36 in the 107-103 win over the Knicks. He also shot 17.6 percent from three over two games. Neither number is evidence that the dispute has cost Boston anything.

Pritchard's isolation role is plausible, but the numbers cannot confirm it.

ESPN framed Payton Pritchard as Boston's unlikely iso king. The available figures are minutes and points: 29.0 minutes and 10.5 points a game over two games, with 17 points in the loss at Detroit. That shows a heavy rotation role, not how he creates his shots. Boston and Pritchard agreed to a two-year extension on October 13, and no terms have been reported. Any claim about what he is worth is unsupported.

George's scoring is documented; the defensive claims need a bigger sample.

CelticsBlog's Nate Moskowitz wrote about how George disrupted the Knicks' offense, and Bill Sy wrote that Jordan Walsh neutralized the Finals MVP. George's scoring is real: 38 at Detroit, 15 against New York, 26.5 a game. Points cannot verify a defensive claim, though. Walsh's line is thin at 16.9 minutes, 2.5 points and 4.5 rebounds a game, and it cannot confirm an assignment. CelticsBlog's Grant Burfeind asked what the rotation shows after two games. The answer is a short sample, with Devin Carter out and an estimated return of November 8.

Is the Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum dispute affecting the Celtics?

Nothing in Boston's results shows it. The Celtics are 1-1 and eighth in the East, and the outlets are reporting words, not on-court effects.

What are the terms of Payton Pritchard's extension?

None have been reported. Boston and Pritchard agreed to a two-year extension on October 13, with no dollar figures or option details.
