Four Games In, the Clippers' Numbers Point at the Offense

Six figures behind a 1-3 start: what each says about the rotation, the payroll and the West, and where each stops.

By the Clippers Nightly Desk · Friday, October 30

The Clippers are 1-3 and 12th in the West, with a -1.2 net rating posted mostly without Brandon Ingram, Bradley Beal and Max Strus. The figures describe a short-handed team whose scoring is the gap, not a roster that has run out of options.

-1.2: Net rating
1

The deficit sits on the offensive end.

A 104.9 offensive rating against a 106.1 defensive mark leaves the Clippers at -1.2, a gap that sits mostly with the scoring. The defense has held up well enough to keep two of the three losses within single digits; the 87 points in the Lakers rematch show the ceiling when shots stop falling. What the numbers cannot settle is the healthy version of this team, because Ingram, Beal and Strus have not been part of it.

2

Garland is carrying more than his shooting supports.

Darius Garland averages 21.5 points and 6.5 assists in 32.5 minutes, but at 34.5 percent from three he has been the only steady source of offense. Keaton Wagler's 15.0 points at 39.1 percent and Kobe Sanders' 73.8 percent true shooting over his last 10 games are the encouraging secondary signs. Derrick Jones Jr. at 55.6 percent from deep is a four-game sample, and no one should price it as his real level.

3

The cap sheet buys patience, not a fix.

Payroll stands at $188.9M, over the cap and under the $200.4M tax line, with Garland at $42.2M and Ingram at $40.0M at the top. The room below the tax is real, but the trade currency is thin: the 2029 and 2030 firsts are forfeited and the 2027 and 2028 firsts are swaps. Blake Wesley has joined the team, and Shams Charania reported the signing as a hardship move for 10 days. Law Murray reported that the club is picking up Yanic Konan Niederhauser's option, which Hoops Rumors also carried. The front office is still adding depth in small pieces, with no major move.

4

The West race is still close enough to fix with a few wins.

The Clippers trail the 3-2 Spurs by 1.5 games for sixth and the 2-3 Warriors by 0.5 for tenth, with 78 games to play. The current pace projects to 21-61, a number that mostly shows how small the sample is. Minnesota tonight is without Anthony Edwards and Donte DiVincenzo, and Rui Hachimura has been cleared. Ingram, Beal, Strus and Niederhauser are all listed Out with Nov. 8 as the target date, which is the earliest the real rotation can be measured.

Are the Clippers paying the luxury tax in 2026-27?

No. Payroll is $188.9M, over the salary cap but below the $200.4M tax line.

When could Brandon Ingram and Bradley Beal play again?

Both are listed Out with a Nov. 8 target date, as are Max Strus and Yanic Konan Niederhauser. Jordan Miller's target date is March 2, 2027.
