Bronny James Waits in the Wings of a Crowded Backcourt

A 22-year-old guard on a $2.3M deal has one clear job to claim this season, and it is a small one.

The Lakers are 2-0 and the guard room is full: Austin Reaves at $41.2M, Collin Sexton back from his calf problem, Quentin Grimes in the closing group. Bronny James, number 9, does not appear in the box score of the win over the Clippers, and the question of what role is left for him sits there unanswered.

Small Minutes, Clean Shooting

Last season James played 42 games at 8.9 minutes a night. He scored 2.9 points, grabbed 0.5 rebounds and handed out 1.2 assists. He shot 40.9% overall, 38.6% from three on 1.4 attempts a game, and 85.7% on free throws. The volume is tiny, so the percentages prove little. The turnover count says more: 0.6 a game, a guard who rarely gave the ball away in the minutes he got.

Two Ratings, Two Stories

His advanced numbers split cleanly. His defensive rating was 114.2, better than the 115.5 the Lakers posted as a team. His offensive rating was 106.2, against a team mark of 117.0, and that gap produced a net rating of minus 8.0. His usage was 16.3%, his true shooting 51.7%, his assist rate 19.5% and his rebound rate 3.2%. He did not hurt the Lakers on defense. The offense stalled when he was on the floor, and last season's lineup data holds no five-man group that says otherwise.

The Job Description

The roster is deep at guard: Reaves, Sexton, Grimes, Jaden Hardy, Adou Thiero and rookie Cameron Carr share the room. James, 22 and in his third season on the roster sheet, cannot out-score any of them. His case is narrower. He is healthy, with an illness on Oct. 19 cleared the next day, and he costs $2.3M this season, with a $2.5M team option for 2027-28. The verdict is simple. He needs to be the guard who defends at the team's level, protects the ball and lifts his offensive rating toward the 117.0 the club ran last season. Do that in short bursts and the option is easy. Do not, and the Lakers, who sit $0.9M above the tax line, will notice where the roster spot could go.
