The Lakers scored 129 points on their home floor, got 41 from Doncic, built an 11-point lead and still took their first loss. Portland scored 34 in each of the last two quarters, and four games in, this roster faces the question that decides contenders.

The Case for Patience
The scoreboard says 3-1, fifth in the West, on pace for 62-20. The Lakers beat the Clippers 125-117 and won 132-123 in Utah after Doncic's 52-point night. Against Portland the starters produced 96 points. Reaves went 8 for 13 with seven assists and no turnovers. Mamukelashvili gave the second unit 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Kessler finished with eight rebounds and two blocks. Cameron Carr and Adou Thiero, both listed out, carry an Oct. 28 target date, so Redick may soon have more bodies to work with. An offense this potent forgives a lot of nights.
The Case for Alarm
It did not forgive this one. The three opponents before Portland scored 117, 123 and then 136, a climb in the wrong direction. Five Blazers reached double figures, led by Avdija and Morant with 23 each, and Morant made 9 of his 13 shots. Lillard scored 10 in the final quarter while Portland erased the lead. Thybulle, signed as a stopper, finished minus-12, with LaRavia and Grimes each at minus-10. The locker room heard it. Lakers Nation reported that Redick believed his defense got "broken down," and that Kessler took responsibility for the struggles. The Los Angeles Times wrote that the Lakers stress needing "championship defense."
The Verdict
The defense is the season's defining question, and the answer will not arrive by trade. Payroll sits at $201.3 million, above the $200.4 million tax line, with the first apron at $209.0 million. The 2027 first is protected to Memphis and the 2029 first is owed to Dallas. Reports of the front office exploring trades have named no player and no terms. So the fix lives on this roster: in Kessler's paint, in who closes beside Doncic and Reaves, and in whether Carr and Thiero can defend on the perimeter. Tonight's Clippers are 1-2 and without Hachimura, Beal, Ingram and Strus, so a strong defensive night would prove little and a leaky one would say a lot. Our answer is that this group can win plenty of regular-season shootouts. An 18th banner takes stops, though, and right now the stops depend on Kessler, on the rotation and on two players coming back from injury.
Why did the Lakers lose to the Trail Blazers?
Portland scored 34 points in each of the last two quarters and erased an 11-point Lakers lead to win 136-129, despite 41 points from Doncic. Five Blazers scored in double figures.
Can the Lakers trade for defensive help?
Their room is thin. Payroll is above the luxury tax line, the 2027 and 2029 firsts are committed elsewhere, and trade reports have named no Lakers player or terms.
