Desmond Bane shot 2-of-11 in Friday's 93-115 loss, but his season-long profile says he is the steadiest scorer Orlando has while Paolo Banchero is out. His job now is to hold the floor open and add a little creation, starting Sunday at the Knicks.

Bane has to be the shooting floor while Banchero is out.
Banchero is listed out with a right ankle injury and an estimated return of 2026-11-22. Jonathan Isaac is also out, and Anthony Black is day-to-day. That leaves Bane as the one proven perimeter scorer healthy and in the lineup. Last season he played all 82 games, averaged 20.1 points on 48.4% shooting and made 39.1% of 5.2 three-point attempts a night. He also hit 90.8% at the line. Orlando will not get much spacing from anywhere else if he is off.
Friday's miss was ugly, but it was one night.
Bane scored 5 points on 2-of-11 shooting and went 1-of-9 from three in 27 minutes. Orlando Magic Daily noted that he fouled out with 10:31 left in the fourth quarter and called the fouls frustration, adding that the team will struggle if he is not dialed in from deep. His plus-minus of -2 was still the best on the team in a game Orlando lost by 22. It was a shot-making problem, not a role problem. One stretch from three does not rewrite a season that looked like this one.
His numbers describe an efficient scorer, not a primary creator.
Last season Bane posted a 60.7% true shooting on a 22.4% usage rate, with a 19.0% assist rate and a 5.9% rebound rate. His offensive rating was 113.6 and his defensive rating 111.5, a net rating of 2.2 on a team that finished at 0.6. That is a player who raises the floor of a lineup without driving it. With Banchero's touches up for grabs, the useful step is a few more possessions where Bane makes the pass instead of taking the shot. The assist rate is where he has room.
At $39.4M, he has to give Orlando more than spacing.
Bane is owed $39.4M this season, then $42.2M in 2027-28 and $44.9M in 2028-29. That is the third-largest salary on a $218.1M payroll that sits above the first apron, behind Franz Wagner at $41.8M and Banchero at $41.5M. There is little room to add help, so the contract has to return real value on the floor. He is not on the injury report, and the next test comes quickly: the Knicks on Sunday, then two games at Toronto. The verdict is simple. Bane needs to be the 39.1% shooter again, and in Banchero's absence, a steady second option on offense.
Is Desmond Bane injured?
No. He is not on Orlando's injury report. Banchero, Isaac, Penda and Nelson are listed out, and Black is day-to-day.
How much does Desmond Bane make?
Bane earns $39.4M in 2026-27, then $42.2M in 2027-28 and $44.9M in 2028-29.
