Rumor Check: Houston's Wire Is Mostly Confirmed Paperwork

Most Rockets reports this month were roster housekeeping that has since been confirmed. One open item and one fresh note remain.

By the Rockets Nightly Desk · Sunday, October 25

Nearly every report touching Houston since October 1 is a small roster move, and the confirmed ones are done. With payroll at $205.5 million against a $200.4 million tax line, the cap sheet leaves no room for a splash.

Oct. 1

Brett Siegel reported that Houston waived two-way player Rafael Castro. The status is confirmed. It is the most solid kind of report: a named source, a small move and a settled outcome. Nothing in it changes the cap picture, and it is the baseline for judging the rest of the month's items.

Oct. 10

Dave McMenamin's report that the Lakers signed Castro and waived William Kyle III is also confirmed. It matters to Houston only as the follow-up to the Oct. 1 waiver: Castro landed in Los Angeles. It carries no signal about the Rockets' plans, and it shouldn't be read as one.

Oct. 13 to 17

Three items sit in this stretch. An Oct. 13 piece on Adam Silver's comments about NBA Europe and prediction markets carries a confidence score of 31 and is still open. It is league business, not Houston news, so treat it as noise. A minor-moves roundup on Oct. 15 is confirmed, and so is the Oct. 17 report that the Rockets cut three camp invitees. A second minor-moves roundup on Oct. 17 scores 35 and remains open.

Oct. 19

The report that Houston converted Oscar Tshiebwe and Julian Phillips to two-way deals and waived Sean Pedulla scores only 38 and is marked open. Events have moved past that score: Pedulla has left the team, and Tshiebwe and Phillips are both on the roster. Credible, and effectively done. The low number reflects the headline's age, not doubt about the move.

Oct. 25

Rod Walker of Hoops Rumors published Southwest Notes naming Missi, Clayton, the Rockets and the Spurs. The headline names Houston but no move, so there is nothing to grade yet. The cap sheet says why a big swing is unlikely: payroll is $5.1 million over the tax line, with Durant at $43.9 million and Sengun at $35.6 million.

Next The Rockets host the Hawks on Oct. 26, then play at Milwaukee on Oct. 28. Watch the injury report for Steven Adams, whose estimated return is Oct. 28, and for Marcus Smart, estimated Oct. 26.
Are there any credible Rockets trade rumors right now?

No trade report is on the Rockets' board. The latest item, Rod Walker's Oct. 25 Southwest Notes, names Houston without describing a move. The other recent reports are roster housekeeping.

Can the Rockets afford a big move under the cap?

Not easily. Payroll is $205.5 million, above the $200.4 million luxury tax line, and the biggest contracts are Durant, Sengun, VanVleet and Smith.
