Rumor Check: Castro's Exit, Durant's 2028 Eye, and the Smith Jr. Ask

One confirmed waiver, a dormant Team USA line, and an outlet's push for more from the Rockets' young forward.

By the Rockets Nightly Desk · Sunday, October 11

The only completed transaction in the file is the Castro waiver, closed when the Lakers signed him on October 10. Everything else circulating right now is either low-confidence and years out, or isn't a transaction report at all.

Sept. 14

The oldest line in the file has nothing to do with Houston's current roster. Kevin Durant reiterated his desire to play for Team USA in 2028, a report carrying a confidence score of 20 and still marked open. That's years out and touches no cap mechanism; file it as noise, not something to track this week.

Oct. 1

The first real transaction: Houston waived two-way big man Rafael Castro, a Brett Siegel report that landed confirmed, not speculative. The move trimmed the two-way slot without touching the 18-man core or the $205.5 million payroll already sitting above the $200.4 million luxury tax line — a cut at the margins, not a cap play.

Oct. 10

Castro landed. Dave McMenamin reported the Lakers signed him and waived William Kyle III in the same move, closing the loop Houston opened nine days earlier. No trade exception, no return interest from Houston's side — just a player finding a new two-way home. The cleanest kind of rumor to check: it resolved itself.

Oct. 11

Today's line reads differently. Hoops Rumors, via Arthur Hill, reported the Rockets want more improvement from Jabari Smith Jr. That's an expectation story, not a trade report, and it landed the same day Smith put up 14 points and nine boards on 6-of-10 shooting in the Dallas rematch — an answer, if not a resolution.

Next The preseason finale against the Thunder on October 15 is the last test before the October 21 opener against Dallas starts counting for real.
Did the Rockets trade for anyone this week?

No. The only roster move was a two-way waiver: Rafael Castro left Houston on October 1 and signed with the Lakers on October 10.

Is Jabari Smith Jr. being shopped in a trade?

No report says that. Hoops Rumors described it as the Rockets wanting more improvement from him on the floor, not a trade pursuit.
