Heat Must Steal Atlanta Before the Western Trip Bites

The Hawks tonight, the Pacers Friday, then three road games out West that end on a back-to-back.

Miami opens a five-game week at 0-4 with one home date and four road games, and the toughest stretch comes last. If the Heat leave Atlanta and Indiana empty-handed, the trip to Los Angeles and San Francisco becomes a salvage job.

1.5: Games behind 10th place

Atlanta First

Wednesday is at the Hawks. Miami comes in on a day's rest, and so does Atlanta. Each club has played four times in a week. Quin Snyder's team is 2-2 and riding a two-game skid, so neither side arrives in form. Jalen Johnson is the man to stop: he averaged 21.5 points, 9.8 rebounds and 8.3 assists last season. Nickeil Alexander-Walker added 18.8 points and CJ McCollum 17.3. Atlanta is without Henri Veesaar (right knee) and Mouhamed Gueye (left foot), and Aaron Wiggins is listed Day-To-Day with a left knee issue. The Hawks play again the next night. Miami does not.

Home, Then Gone

The Pacers visit Friday in Emirates NBA Cup play, and that is the last home game for a while. Monday is at the Lakers, Wednesday at the Clippers, and Thursday at the Warriors on NBA TV. The Clippers and Warriors games come on consecutive nights, the first back-to-back of the season, at the end of a three-game road swing. A team built around Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo has to show it can hold up on tired legs, because that is what conditioning is for.

Who Sits

Simone Fontecchio is out tonight with an illness, with an estimated return of October 30. That costs Miami one of its few efficient scorers: his true shooting is 70.8% over his last 10 games, though the sample is small. Pelle Larsson is cleared after a right ankle scare, which keeps a 30.7-minute player in the rotation.

Answer on the Floor

The problem is getting stops. Miami's 118.8 defensive rating is the number behind the losses, and the losses have started to pull in personal arguments. In an ESPN story, Adebayo said critics "make me the scapegoat." The Miami Herald's Barry Jackson published an analysis on how hard it is to win big with this roster's construction. Talk does not fix either one. Rotations, closeouts and effort on the glass do. Davion Mitchell's 18.0 points and 7.0 assists and Antetokounmpo's 28.5 points are not the issue.

Bottom Line

Miami sits 14th in the East, 1.5 games behind the Magic for 10th and 2.5 behind the Cavaliers for sixth, with 78 games left. Losing pays nothing either: Charlotte holds a protected claim on the 2027 first. Atlanta and Indiana are the games to take before the West. Split them and the trip is survivable. Lose both and 0-6 goes on the plane.

Who do the Heat play this week?

Miami plays at Atlanta on October 28, hosts Indiana on October 30, then plays at the Lakers on November 2, the Clippers on November 4 and the Warriors on November 5. The Warriors game is on NBA TV.

Is Simone Fontecchio playing against the Hawks?

No. Fontecchio is out with an illness, and his estimated return is October 30 against the Pacers.
