Giannis and Bam Must Prove the Fit Before 0-4 Hardens

Miami paid for two stars in one frontcourt. Four losses in, the pairing has to answer for the defense.

Miami built its season on Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo sharing the floor, and the 0-4 start has put that bet on trial. The case against the fit is loud, but the evidence points at the defense and Adebayo's shot, not at the idea.

The Real Question

Can Antetokounmpo and Adebayo, $58.5M and $49.8M on the books, share a frontcourt well enough to win? So far, no. Miami is 0-4, 14th in the East, and its net rating sits at -13.5. Everything else this season comes after that question.

The Case Against

Adebayo is averaging 11.8 points and shooting 16.7 on threes. Andrew Wiggins is at 12.5 from deep. The defense is giving up a 118.8 rating while the offense manages 105.3. Adebayo told ESPN his critics make him the scapegoat. The Miami Herald's Barry Jackson published an analysis on how hard it is to win big with this roster construction, and All U Can Heat's Michael Saenz argued Adebayo may need to sit. Complaining about the noise doesn't answer it.

The Case For

Antetokounmpo is carrying his end: 28.5 points, 9.5 boards and 5.0 assists, plus a 29-point, 14-rebound, 11-assist triple-double against Dallas. Davion Mitchell is at 18.0 points and 7.0 assists, shooting 45.0 on threes, and Portis is at 47.4 from deep. The last two losses came by four at home to the Mavericks and by five in Charlotte. Miami trails 10th place by only 1.5 games with 78 left.

No Escape Hatch

There is no easy way out. The payroll stands at $206.9M, above the $200.4M tax line. The 2027 first is protected to Charlotte and the 2028 first is conditional to Charlotte. Breaking up the pairing would cost assets Miami doesn't have. Dwyane Wade told the Miami Herald that with this duo, there's a conversation that has to happen. Spoelstra's group needs to have it now.

The Verdict

The fit isn't what's failing. The effort and execution around it are. Antetokounmpo is producing, so the burden falls on Adebayo to anchor a defense that is leaking and stop forcing a jumper that isn't falling. Tonight in Atlanta, against a 2-2 Hawks team with Aaron Wiggins day-to-day and Fontecchio out for Miami, a defense this expensive has no excuse to give up 118.8 again.

Why are the Miami Heat 0-4 to start the 2026-27 season?

The defense has given up a 118.8 rating while the offense sits at 105.3. Bam Adebayo and Andrew Wiggins have both struggled from three, and only the losses to Dallas and Charlotte were close.

Can Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo play together?

The early numbers don't prove they can't. Antetokounmpo is averaging 28.5 points, and the bigger problems are Adebayo's 16.7 three-point shooting and a defense that isn't getting stops.
