The defining question of 2026-27 is whether Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo can share the floor and turn a 43-39 team into a contender. The talent says yes. The shooting, the health history and a payroll with no room left say Miami still has to earn it.

One Question
Erik Spoelstra opens tonight against the Timberwolves on ESPN with both stars cleared. Antetokounmpo came off the injury report October 17, and Adebayo followed October 20 after his groin issue. The payroll, the traded picks and the defensive target all depend on one thing: whether these two bigs work together. The Miami Herald's Anthony Chiang reported that the stated goal is to be No. 1 in defense. Miami has set that goal in public, so it will be judged against it.
The Case For
Antetokounmpo produced 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds and 5.4 assists a night last season. Adebayo gave Miami 20.1 points and 10.0 rebounds over 73 games. No other frontcourt in the East has two players with that size, length and passing. The shooters to space the floor around them are already here. Bobby Portis Jr. hit 45.6% from three last season, Andrew Wiggins 41.4% and Tim Hardaway Jr. 40.7%. If Spoelstra gives those shooters the minutes, the paint opens up.
The Case Against
Antetokounmpo played 36 games last season. A player who misses more than half the season can't be the foundation of a contender. Neither big stretches a defense: Adebayo shot 31.8% from three, Antetokounmpo 33.3%. Last season's defense ranked 13th with a 113.6 rating, and the net rating of plus-2.1 was a middling team's number. The preseason didn't settle anything either. Miami lost 124-125 to Minnesota and gave up 136 in Orlando.
No Safety Net
Payroll is $206.9M against a $200.4M luxury tax line. The 2027 first is protected to Charlotte and the 2028 first is conditional to Charlotte, so Miami's own first isn't clearly its own again until 2029. Wiggins carries a $30.2M player option. Ira Winderman reported that Nick Richards' 2026-27 salary is now guaranteed, which keeps him as center depth while Vladislav Goldin is day-to-day with an ankle injury. If the pairing fails, Miami has no cheap way to fix it.
The Verdict
Yes, it can work, but only under two conditions. Antetokounmpo has to stay on the floor, and Spoelstra has to put shooters around his two bigs instead of extra size. Anthony Edwards scored 28.8 points a night last season, and Minnesota arrives without Donte DiVincenzo, who is out with an Achilles injury. That makes tonight a fair first test. If Miami really wants the top defense in the league, it has to look like one tonight.
Is Bam Adebayo playing in the Heat season opener?
Adebayo was cleared from the injury report on October 20 after a groin issue. The only Heat player still listed is Vladislav Goldin, who is day-to-day with an ankle injury.
Can Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo play together for the Heat?
They can if Miami surrounds them with shooters like Portis, Wiggins and Hardaway, because neither shot better than 33.3% from three last season. The bigger risk is availability: Antetokounmpo played only 36 games last season.
