The Heat open the 2026-27 season at home against the Timberwolves on October 21, an expansion sibling from 1988 that already beat them by one point in preseason. The franchise history says the bar is a Riley-grade defense, and last season's 13th-ranked unit did not meet it.

Same birth year
The Heat began play in November 1988, one of four expansion teams that year with the Magic, the Hornets and the Timberwolves. Wednesday night on ESPN, Miami opens the regular season against Minnesota, the one 1988 classmate it has not seen since October 10, when the Wolves left Kaseya Center with a 124-125 preseason win. Chris Finch brings a 49-33 team from last season, a 3.1 net rating and Anthony Edwards at 28.8 points a night. Donte DiVincenzo is out with a right Achilles injury.
One point, again
On this date in 2018, Miami lost 112-113 to Charlotte, another 1988 expansion team. Eight years later the preseason loss to Minnesota had the same margin. One-point games are decided by the things this program claims to own: a closeout, a box-out, a free throw at the end of a long shift. Ryan Conwell and Vladislav Goldin led that night with 22 and 18 points. Goldin is now Day-To-Day with an ankle issue, expected back for the opener. Pelle Larsson, fighting an illness, carries the same target date.
Riley set the bar
Micky Arison bought the team in 1995 and handed it to Pat Riley, who built the 1996-97 group that went 61-21 and 32-9 on the road. That team went to the conference finals. Last season's team went 43-39 with a defense ranked 13th and a net rating of plus-2.1. The Miami Herald reported that Erik Spoelstra has set the goal of being No. 1 in defense. The gap between 13th and first is not a slogan. It is Adebayo, Antetokounmpo and Davion Mitchell guarding at a pace of 104.2 for 82 games.
Two bigs, old question
Riley paired Dwyane Wade with Shaquille O'Neal in 2004, won 59 games, and took the 2006 title from Dallas after falling behind 0-2. The modern version is Giannis Antetokounmpo at $58.5 million and Bam Adebayo at $49.8 million, a payroll of $206.9 million sitting above the $200.4 million tax threshold. Adebayo was cleared on October 20 after a week of groin updates. Antetokounmpo averaged 27.6 points in 36 games last season. The frontcourt debate over whether they fit together ends only on the floor, starting Wednesday.
Bottom line
Spoelstra took this job after a 15-67 season and has since coached in six Finals. He does not need history lessons. The roster does. A one-point loss to this same opponent ten days ago is the only recent evidence, and it was not good enough. Wednesday, the standard is the 1997 defense, not the 2025-26 one.
