History Explains Everything About Miami Except Giannis

Miami has always explained how a superstar arrives — trade, signing, waiver claim. This one has no record at all.

66–16Best record in franchise history
By the Heat Nightly Desk · Tuesday, October 13

Shaquille O'Neal arrived by trade in 2004, LeBron James and Chris Bosh by free agency in 2010, Jimmy Butler by trade in 2019 — every star Miami has built around came with a transaction on record. Giannis Antetokounmpo already has 18 points in a preseason win here, and that record still does not exist.

A Franchise Of Paper Trails

Pat Riley built this franchise on deals he could point to. Alonzo Mourning and Tim Hardaway arrived in 1995 under Riley. Shaquille O'Neal came by trade in 2004. LeBron James and Chris Bosh signed as free agents in 2010 and built the Big Three. Jimmy Butler arrived by trade in 2019. Every one of those moves has a paper trail.

Milwaukee Used To Be The Enemy

Heat Culture was tested against Milwaukee twice. The Bucks swept Miami in the first round in 2021. Two years later Miami flipped it, beating Milwaukee as the eighth seed in the first round, their third playoff meeting in four seasons. That rivalry is part of the organization's identity. The player who defined that Milwaukee team now wears a Heat jersey.

Eighteen Points, No Record

Antetokounmpo scored 18 points in the October 8 win over New Orleans and has played in every preseason game since. No trade, no signing, no waiver claim explains how he got on this roster. Compare that to Shaq's trade or LeBron's free-agency pitch: both were public and logged within days. This one has stayed open since the roster first listed his name.

The Herald Is Already Asking

Anthony Chiang's October 12 column in the Miami Herald raised the question directly: how Spoelstra splits minutes between Adebayo and Antetokounmpo once the games count. That question assumes Antetokounmpo's spot on the roster is settled. The transaction history says otherwise.

Still 0-0, Still Unexplained

Three preseason games are in the book — wins over Toronto and New Orleans, a loss to Minnesota — and the record still reads 0-0. The Nets visit Wednesday, then Orlando, then the October 21 opener against Minnesota on ESPN. Every Heat superstar arrival before this one came with an explanation. This one needs one before the games start counting.

How did Giannis Antetokounmpo join the Heat?

No trade, signing or waiver claim has been recorded. He is already on the roster and scored 18 points in the October 8 win over New Orleans, but the transaction explaining his arrival has not surfaced.

When does the Heat's regular season start?

The opener is set for October 21 against Minnesota on ESPN. Through three preseason games the record is 0-0, with the Nets and Magic left on the preseason schedule first.
