The Lakers head to San Francisco at 4-1, fourth in the West, carrying a $201.3M payroll that sits just above the $200.4M luxury tax line. The stars are paid like stars, the draft cupboard is mostly spoken for, and every roster move now gets measured against two aprons.

Top-Billed Salaries
Doncic leads the sheet at $49.8M, and his number rises to $53.8M in 2027-28. Austin Reaves follows at $41.2M, rising to $44.5M, and Walker Kessler earns $30.2M before $31.7M next season. Those three alone account for most of a $165.0M salary cap. Quentin Grimes at $14.0M and Sandro Mamukelashvili at $13.0M fill out the top five, and both justified the billing at the Clippers on Oct. 28, when Grimes scored 23 and Mamukelashvili added 13 points and 8 rebounds in a 103-87 win. Collin Sexton, at $9.4M, scored 21 in that game and finished plus-23. The Lakers are getting real production from the middle of the payroll.
The Aprons Overhead
The first apron sits at $209.0M and the second at $221.7M. At $201.3M, the Lakers are past the tax but below both aprons, which leaves room for a trade that adds salary, but not much. This week's move cost nothing on that front: Lawson Lovering joined on a two-way deal and AK Okereke was waived. Dalton Knecht, waived Oct. 19, still appears on the sheet at $4.2M this season and $6.5M in 2027-28. Jake Fischer reported in mid-October that the Lakers were among four teams exploring trades, and no player, pick or term has been named since.
Next Summer's Ledger
Jake LaRavia at $6.0M and Kevon Looney, Ziaire Williams and Matisse Thybulle at $2.4M each are not on the 2027-28 sheet. Jarred Vanderbilt holds a $13.3M player option. The front office controls team options on Jaden Hardy at $6.0M and on Adou Thiero and Bronny James at $2.5M each. Draft capital is thin. The 2027 first is protected to Memphis and the 2027 second is conditional to Brooklyn. The 2028 picks are swaps, the 2029 first is owed to Dallas and the 2029 second to Memphis, and in 2030 the first is a swap and the second goes to Brooklyn. Any upgrade would have to be paid for mostly in salary and players, not picks.
Are the Lakers over the luxury tax in 2026-27?
Yes. Their $201.3M payroll is above the $200.4M luxury tax line and below the first apron at $209.0M.
What draft picks can the Lakers trade?
Very few outright. The 2027 first is protected to Memphis, the 2029 first is owed to Dallas, and the 2028 and 2030 firsts are swaps.
