Doncic Returns for a Rematch While the Lakers' Buyers Grab the Headlines

Vanderbilt's bench night, a sale still in motion and Lendeborg's wait for Luka are driving the Lakers coverage.

The Lakers arrive at Golden State at 4-1 for their Emirates NBA Cup opener, and their headliner has been cleared after a back injury kept him out of the Clippers rout. The coverage has split three ways: a quiet forward's bench work, the people buying the franchise, and a Warriors scorer who wants another shot at Luka.

The Quiet Professional

In the Los Angeles Times, Thuc Nhi Nguyen wrote that Jarred Vanderbilt led the bench unit against the Clippers, and her headline called him "a true professional." Lakers Nation wrote that JJ Redick likes pairing Vanderbilt with Sandro Mamukelashvili. In a separate Lakers Nation story, Sexton praised Vanderbilt for always staying ready. The facts back the bench story: the reserves helped turn the Clippers game into a 103-87 win, Sexton scored 21, and Vanderbilt has been healthy since he was cleared Oct. 20. They do not back a case for more minutes. That case rests on one night, with no season line behind it. The stronger evidence belongs to Matisse Thybulle, who Lakers Nation says has Redick "pleasantly surprised." Thybulle is averaging 9.4 points and shooting 50.0 percent from three in 24.7 minutes.

New Owners, Old Bills

Lakers Nation reported that Josh Kushner and Bob Iger are shopping minority stakes in the club. The same outlet also ran Mark Walter explaining why he decided to sell, along with Doncic's reaction to the sale. What is on record: on Aug. 12, 2026, Walter agreed to sell his controlling interest to Iger and Kushner for $12.5 billion, an American sports record, and the Buss family kept a 15 percent stake from Walter's 2025 purchase. Nothing in that record confirms or rules out a stake sale, so it stays Lakers Nation's reporting. The buyers will inherit a $201.3 million payroll that sits $0.9 million over the luxury tax line, with the first apron at $209.0 million.

Lendeborg Wants Another Shot

Lakers Nation posted video of Yaxel Lendeborg saying he is looking forward to a rematch with Doncic, and ESPN billed tonight as an NBA Cup group-stage game. The rematch has a real edge. Lendeborg is averaging 22.6 points and 9.2 rebounds, and Stephen Curry is scoring 28.8 a night. The Lakers won the last regular-season meeting 127-105 on Oct. 21, when Doncic scored 28. Golden State is 2-3, and Butler, Kristaps Porzingis and Moody are all listed out. Lakers Nation also carried Ty Lue's praise of Austin Reaves's growth. The numbers support it: Reaves is averaging 24.4 points and shooting 48.1 percent from three.

Is Luka Doncic playing against the Warriors tonight?

He has been cleared to play after a back injury kept him out of the 103-87 win over the Clippers. He is averaging 36.0 points and 8.3 assists in four games.

Who is buying the Lakers?

On Aug. 12, 2026, Mark Walter agreed to sell his controlling interest to Bob Iger and Joshua Kushner for $12.5 billion. Lakers Nation has reported that the pair is shopping minority stakes.
