Doncic, a Sore Back and Golden State: The Headliner Weighs His Return

Day-to-day with a back issue, the Lakers' $49.8M star carries a 40.3 percent usage rate into Friday's Warriors date.

The Lakers routed the Clippers 103-87 on Oct. 28 with their marquee name in street clothes, and Friday's trip to Golden State asks how much of the show he takes back. Doncic is listed day-to-day with a back issue and projected to return Oct. 30, the night of the Warriors game.

A Lead Who Fills the Frame

Four games, 35.5 minutes a night, and a line that reads like a career peak: 36.0 points, 8.3 assists, 6.8 rebounds, 48.4 percent from the floor, 39.6 percent on 13.3 threes a game, 87.5 percent at the line. He opened against these same Warriors with 28 in a 127-105 win on Oct. 21, dropped 52 with 10 assists at Utah on Oct. 25, then poured in 41 in a 136-129 loss to Portland two nights later. The rarest part is the efficiency at that volume. A 66.3 percent true shooting mark on a 40.3 percent usage rate means the Lakers hand him the script on nearly every possession and he still delivers clean takes. His 133.6 offensive rating is the engine behind a team rating of 122.5.

The Cost of Top Billing

Every star turn has a price, and his shows up in two places. He is giving the ball away 5.8 times a night, the toll of running so much of the offense through one set of hands. And the floor leaks at the other end: a 115.1 defensive rating with him on the court against a team mark of 112.3. His 18.5 net rating still dwarfs the damage, and the group he trusts most, alongside Matisse Thybulle, Ziaire Williams, Austin Reaves and Walker Kessler, is plus-20.4 in 51 minutes. Williams is day-to-day too, with a foot issue. The financial weight is just as heavy: $49.8 million this season, $53.8 million next, and a $57.8 million player option for 2028-29, on a payroll of $201.3 million that sits past the $200.4 million tax line.

What Friday Demands

Golden State arrives at 2-3 with Stephen Curry scoring 28.8 a night and Yaxel Lendeborg at 22.6, and Silver Screen and Roll reported that Lendeborg is looking forward to a rematch with Doncic. The Warriors are thin, with Jimmy Butler III, Kristaps Porzingis and Moses Moody all ruled out. The Clippers win also showed what the supporting cast can do: Quentin Grimes scored 23 and Collin Sexton 21 as the reserves outscored nobody's expectations with 36 points. The verdict is plain. Doncic does not need to score more; he needs to cost less. Fewer than six giveaways, a few more stops, and a bench that splits the load would turn a 4-1 start built on his brilliance into a season that does not depend on his back holding up for 77 more nights.

Will Doncic play against the Warriors on Oct. 30?

He is listed day-to-day with a back issue and projected to return Oct. 30, the date of the game. His final status had not been set.

How much is Doncic paid by the Lakers?

He earns $49.8 million in 2026-27 and $53.8 million in 2027-28. The 2028-29 season is a $57.8 million player option.
