Doncic at 36.2 a Night, and the Numbers Framing His Lakers

Six figures that define the 4-2 Lakers before Toronto: a scoring star, a vanishing bench and a payroll at the tax.

Thirty-seven points from Doncic could not hold up a 38-15 first quarter at Golden State, and the Lakers left with a 112-95 loss. They come home 4-2, fifth in the West, with Toronto arriving Sunday and a set of numbers that explain both the promise and the problem.

The Headliner's Number

Start with 36.2. That is what Doncic is scoring a night through five games, with 7.6 assists and 39.1 percent from deep. At Chase Center he went for 37 on 12-of-27 shooting and finished plus-9, the best mark of any Laker who played. The figure means the offense lives in his hands. It does not prove the load can last: he already sat out games with his back this month, and when he sits, the next man is Austin Reaves, scoring 23.8 at 42.4 percent from three but charged with eight turnovers against the Warriors.

Net Six, Bench Seven

The team's 2026-27 net rating is 6.0, built on a 119.3 offense and a 113.3 defense. That points to a real contender's profile, but six games make a thin sample. The sharper number from Golden State is 7: bench points, against 88 from the starters. Sandro Mamukelashvili was minus-23 in 20 minutes and Collin Sexton minus-19 in 16. A 25-point lead disappeared, and an 18-0 Warriors burst bridging the third and fourth sealed it. One night does not condemn the second unit, though. Quentin Grimes scored 23 and Sexton 21 in the 103-87 win over the Clippers two nights earlier.

Money, Pace and Toronto

The payroll stands at $201.3M. The luxury tax line is $200.4M, and the first apron is $209.0M. That leaves little room to buy help, and the draft cupboard is thin, with the 2027 first protected to Memphis. At this pace the record projects to 55-27, with 76 games left and a two-game cushion over 11th. That projection is arithmetic, not a forecast. Toronto comes in 3-2 with a 10.8 net rating, and ESPN noted Scottie Barnes' 41-point outing. Barnes is scoring 24.0 a game, and Kawhi Leonard is out with a left knee injury. Miami follows the next night.

When do the Lakers play the Raptors?

The Lakers host the Toronto Raptors on Nov. 1, then face the Miami Heat at home on Nov. 2.

Will Ziaire Williams play against Toronto?

Williams was upgraded from out on Oct. 31 with a left foot issue and is listed to return Nov. 1. Adou Thiero, out with a left knee injury, is listed for the same date.
