Flagg Carries a 29.6% Usage Load at 63.5% True Shooting. Now the Three

A 19-year-old runs the Dallas offense and wastes almost nothing. Only his jumper still lags behind the rest.

Cooper Flagg is the engine of this Mavericks offense, and his efficiency holds up under a heavy load. The verdict for this season is simple: keep the usage, add a three-point shot that defenses have to respect.

Heavy Usage, Little Waste

Flagg finishes 29.6% of Dallas possessions and still posts a 63.5% true shooting mark. Plenty of stars carry that load. Very few carry it this cleanly. He scores 25.3 a night in 30.7 minutes, hits 52.2% from the floor and makes 91.7% at the line. The playmaking is real too: a 33.3% assist rate and 6.8 assists against 3.0 turnovers. Against the Thunder he went for 26 and 8 without a single giveaway across 33 minutes. Two nights earlier he dropped 29 and 11 assists in Miami. A first-option creator does exactly this.

The Jumper Is the Tax

The one weak number is from deep. Flagg takes 5.5 threes a game and makes 31.8%. That volume is too high for that percentage. He went 2-of-8 from three against Oklahoma City and still scored 26, because his work at the rim and the 4-of-4 free throw night covered the misses. Good defenses will go under screens and dare him to shoot. Once that number gets into the mid-thirties, a 25-point scorer becomes a matchup nobody can solve. Until then, every pull-up he passes on in favor of a drive is the better shot.

Two-Way Value at Rookie Scale

The defense matches the offense. Flagg averages 2.8 steals and 1.3 blocks, with a 100.8 defensive rating and an 18.5 net rating. The team's net rating is 2.2. Dusty May trusted him in the closing group against OKC with Daniel Gafford, Max Christie, P.J. Washington and Walter Clayton Jr., and Dallas held the Thunder to 15 in the fourth. He is also the best deal on the books: $14.5M this season, $15.2M next, $19.2M in 2028-29, after Dallas exercised his third-year option October 17. The left shoulder that cost him time was cleared October 27, and he is off the injury report. Unbeaten Houston comes in Friday at 5-0. Flagg's job is to keep this usage, keep the turnovers near three and make the three-ball something defenses have to guard.

Is Cooper Flagg injured right now?

No. He was cleared from a left shoulder issue on October 27 and is not on the injury report.

How much is Cooper Flagg paid?

He earns $14.5M this season, $15.2M in 2027-28 and $19.2M in 2028-29. Dallas exercised his third-year option on October 17.
