The Warriors' Flexibility Is a Calendar, Not a Plan

Golden State is paying like a contender above the first apron, and the relief on the 2027-28 sheet comes from expirations, not from any asset the front office controls.

The payroll is $219.8M against a $200.4M tax line, and Butler and Green are missing from the 2027-28 sheet. The room that opens is real, but the few assets that could create more are tied up.

What does $219.8M buy?

The Warriors sit above the first apron at $209.0M and well past the $200.4M tax line, with the second apron at $221.7M and the cap at $165.0M. That is contender money. Curry is at $62.6M and Butler at $56.8M, with Green at $27.7M, Porzingis at $19.5M and Moody at $12.5M behind them. Five contracts carry most of the bill. Butler is out until January 2, Porzingis until December 1, and Moody until December 1 as well. Curry and Green have both been on the injury list this week. A lot of the payroll is sitting in street clothes.

Where does the relief come from?

Look at 2027-28 and the sheet changes shape. Curry drops to $55.7M. Butler and Green do not appear at all. Nine contracts are listed: Curry, Porzingis, Podziemski, Moody, Horford, Lendeborg, Melton and Santos, plus Richard. That looks like breathing room. But it is the calendar doing the work, and the calendar does not choose who replaces them. Butler and Green are the older core, and their salaries leave the books because their deals end, not because anyone was moved.

What is already spoken for?

Podziemski goes from $5.7M this season to $19.0M in 2027-28, and Moody ticks up to $13.4M. Porzingis shows $20.5M as a player option, and Melton has a $5.8M option of his own. So the sheet is not clean. Two of the nine deals can be taken off the books by the player, and a third jumps by more than $13M. The picks add to the squeeze. Golden State owns its firsts in 2027, 2028 and 2029, but the 2030 first is protected to Memphis and the 2030 second is conditional to Memphis. The 2029 second is owed to Brooklyn. The club has few picks to move and no spare ones.

So what is the move?

HoopsRumors reported that the Warriors are exploring trade avenues for Porzingis and have contacted the Bucks. A move like that would be the clearest test of how much flexibility exists, because he is the one mid-size salary with an option attached. But the club is 0-2 and 14th in the West, and the three veterans who keep this roster competitive are all under real injury questions. The honest read is that the Warriors have one lever this year, which is how they handle Porzingis. The bigger room arrives next summer by default. Until then the payroll is a fixed cost, and the games without Curry, Butler and Green are the ones that show whether it was worth paying.

What is the Warriors' payroll for 2026-27?

It is $219.8M, which puts Golden State above the first apron of $209.0M and past the $200.4M luxury tax line.

Who comes off the Warriors' books in 2027-28?

Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green do not appear on the 2027-28 sheet. Porzingis holds a $20.5M player option and Melton a $5.8M option.
