The Porzingis Trade Talk Is Real. A Trade Is Not.

The reports show Golden State listening on Porzingis, but a $19.5M contract, a heavy payroll and an unexplained absence make a completed deal the weakest claim on the board.

Three reports since October 21 have the Warriors exploring or contacting teams about Kristaps Porzingis, and none of them describes a deal. Weighed against the payroll and his status, the talk is credible and the move is not close.

What do the reports actually say?

HoopsRumors reported on October 21 that the Warriors are exploring trade avenues for Porzingis, then on October 22 that the Bucks are among the teams contacted. Both carry a confidence score of 42 and both remain open. Exploring and contacting are first steps. Neither names an offer, a return or a deadline. Brett Siegel's October 24 roundup lists Porzingis among its names at confidence 50, the highest score on the board and still a coin flip.

Does the cap sheet allow it?

Payroll stands at $219.8M, above the first apron and past the $200.4M tax line. Porzingis is paid $19.5M, fourth on the books behind Curry at $62.6M, Jimmy Butler at $56.8M and Green at $27.7M. That is a real salary to move from a payroll this heavy, and the cap limits what the front office can do in trades. Any deal has to be built around that number, and nothing reported says a partner has done the math.

What is a buyer being asked to price?

Porzingis has been out indefinitely since September 28. He was formally listed Out on October 16 with the cause marked Undisclosed/Other, and the estimated return is December 1. An October 14 report on his health sits at confidence 34. A team that calls about him is being asked to value a player whose issue has never been described publicly. That, more than the contract, is why the October 21 and 22 reports read as due diligence and not as a negotiation.

Which reports deserve belief?

The ones that land are small. The report that the Warriors planned to waive Dalen Terry was confirmed. The Porzingis items have not moved from open. The same goes for the October 19 report, via Dalton Johnson, that Kerr called Curry fine after a practice scare: Curry is now listed day-to-day for rest, and NBC Sports Bay Area reported he is not expected to play in Phoenix. Treat Porzingis as a name being shopped quietly, not a player leaving, and expect no resolution before he is healthy enough to be described.

Are the Warriors trading Kristaps Porzingis?

Not according to any report so far. HoopsRumors reported on October 21 and 22 that Golden State is exploring trade avenues and has contacted the Bucks among others, and both reports are still open at confidence 42.

Can the Warriors afford to move Porzingis' contract?

His $19.5M salary sits on a $219.8M payroll that is above the first apron and past the $200.4M tax line. The cap limits what the front office can do in trades, so any deal would have to be built carefully around that figure.
