Through five games, Maxey, Brown, Embiid and James have made the four-star experiment look workable, and the Sixers sit second in the East. The question that will define 2026-27 is not whether they fit, but whether they can share the floor often enough to prove it.

Is the 4-1 start real?
Mostly. Philadelphia carries a 3.3 net rating built on a 103.3 defensive rating, plays at a 104.0 pace, and has climbed from 18th to 10th in the power rankings. Embiid posted a triple-double against Milwaukee, 28 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists, and the Sixers already beat the Knicks 106-100 in New York on October 20. The one clunker, a 93-106 home loss to Detroit, is the warning label.
Do four ball-dominant scorers actually fit together?
So far, yes. Maxey leads at 28.4 points a night, Embiid adds 21.5 with 10.0 boards, Brown gives 20.6 and James is running the offense with 6.8 assists. The catch is spacing: Embiid is at 17.6% on threes and James at 23.1%, so Brown at 40.9% and Dean Wade at 42.9% are holding the floor open. Nurse can live with that as long as Maxey keeps getting downhill.
Why does the injury report matter more than the box score?
Because it never empties. Liberty Ballers listed Brown as questionable for tonight's Cup opener with a knee issue, and a road game at Charlotte follows on October 31. James was moved to Out with a back problem on October 24 before being cleared. Embiid drew rest tags twice in the first week after playing only 38 games last season. Barlow, Walker, Fall and Hukporti are all out. Philadelphia has seen this movie before.
Can the front office buy depth to cover the gaps?
Not easily. A $206.6 million payroll already sits above the $200.4 million luxury-tax threshold, with Embiid at $58.1 million and Brown at $57.1 million. The 2028 first is protected, the 2029 first is a swap, and the 2028 second is conditional to Brooklyn. Philadelphia does own its 2027 and 2030 firsts, which are real chips, but every one spent buys a rotation player for a roster whose ceiling depends on four men, not ten.
Is Jaylen Brown playing against the Knicks on October 30?
Brown has a knee issue and Liberty Ballers listed him as questionable for the Cup game against New York. His estimated return date is October 30.
When will Ariel Hukporti return for the 76ers?
Hukporti has been out with a right Achilles issue since October 6. His estimated return is October 1, 2027, after the 2026-27 season ends.
