Antetokounmpo and Adebayo Must Prove Two Bigs Can Defend Together

Two max-level bigs, a tax bill and no spare firsts: Miami has to make this frontcourt work.

117.2Defensive rating, the real problem
By the Heat Nightly Desk · Saturday, October 31

Miami is 2-4, and the whole season runs through two expensive bigs. The Pacers rout showed what they can do together, but the defense and the spacing show the risk, and the front office has little room to change course.

The Question

Can Antetokounmpo and Adebayo share the floor and win? Fans got loud about it during the 0-4 start. Two wins later, Miami is the 10th seed at 2-4, a game back of sixth-place Atlanta, and nothing else on this roster matters as much.

Yes, Look Closer

Against Indiana, Antetokounmpo finished with 31, 18 boards and 10 assists on 13-19 shooting, his second triple-double in three games. Adebayo scored 27 on 11-14 and added 3 steals. Spoelstra closed with both of them on the floor, next to Mitchell, Wiggins and Jovic. Their gravity gave everyone else room. Mitchell went +32 with 11 assists, and Thompson hit 7-12 from deep. The 145-125 win included a 16-0 run in the second quarter that broke the game open.

No, Look Longer

One rout of a Pacers team without Haliburton, McConnell and Zubac proves little. Miami's defensive rating sits at 117.2 against an offense at 113.6, a -3.6 net. Adebayo is shooting 14.3 percent from three and Antetokounmpo 28.6, so defenses can pack the paint whenever the shooters cool off. Hardaway is at 24.0. Against Indiana the bench scored 28, while the starters scored 110. At the current pace Miami finishes 27-55.

No Exit Ramp

The payroll is $206.9M, above the $200.4M tax line, with Antetokounmpo at $58.5M and Adebayo at $49.8M. The 2027 first-round pick goes to Charlotte with protections, and the 2028 pick carries conditions in Charlotte's favor. Miami doesn't control its own first again until 2029. Without the assets to trade its way out of a bad fit, Miami has to make this pairing work.

Bottom Line

Yes, this pairing can work, and the offense already shows it. The open question is defense. Two bigs this talented should not be giving up 117.2, and conditioning and effort can fix that. Next comes a five-game road trip: Lakers, Clippers, Warriors, Kings, Jazz. If that number doesn't come down by the end of the trip, no triple-double will save the experiment.

Can Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo play together on the Heat?

Against Indiana they did, scoring 31 and 27 and closing the game together. The open issue is defense and spacing, not scoring.

Can the Heat trade for help this season?

It is hard. The payroll is $206.9M, above the $200.4M tax line, and Charlotte has claims on the 2027 and 2028 first-round picks.
