Walker Kessler Is the Lakers' Quiet Anchor, and the Numbers Say He Is Winning

The center is posting a 14.9 net rating over six games while Doncic and Reaves take the spotlight.

Every marquee needs a player who never asks for the light, and Walker Kessler fills that role for the Lakers. Over six games this season he has played 30.5 minutes a night as the rim anchor for a 4-2 team.

The Anchor's Line

Kessler is averaging 14.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 2.8 blocks across six games this season, a small sample but a loud one. He is hitting 72.5% of his shots with a 71.3% true shooting mark, and that efficiency comes on a usage rate of just 17.1%. He takes what the offense hands him and finishes it. His assist rate is 4.8%, so he is not a hub. His rebound rate is 15.2%, and the blocks are the reason opponents think twice at the rim. The one soft spot is the free throw line, where he is at 47.6%, and he has not attempted a three. A center who lives at the rim can survive both.

What the Math Says

His offensive rating is 127.7 and his defensive rating is 112.8, a net of 14.9. The team as a whole sits at a net of 6.0, so Kessler's minutes are running well ahead of the club. One lineup shows it: Doncic, Thybulle, Williams, Reaves and Kessler have a net of plus 20.4 in 51 minutes over four games. Williams is now out with a foot injury, with a return estimated for Nov. 2, so that group cannot take the floor tonight against Toronto. Kessler's job becomes to hold the same shape with a different fourth teammate. By our count he is 9 blocks short of 500 for his career and 84 rebounds short of 2,000. At his pace this season, that is about 4 games and about 10 games away, a projection and not a promise.

Money and Meaning

Kessler earns $30.2M this season, third on the Lakers behind Doncic at $49.8M and Reaves at $41.2M. The deal runs through 2029-30, with $31.7M next year and a player option in the last season at $34.8M. The payroll is $201.3M, above the $200.4M tax line, so every dollar needs to be justified. He is healthy, off the injury report, and he is 25. The verdict is plain: this season Kessler has to be the defensive floor under a Doncic offense that scores plenty and leaks late. If the rim stays protected while the wings rotate through injuries, the contract looks like a bargain by spring.
