Overtime Escape

New Orleans needed the extra five minutes to put Utah away. Regulation finished 104-104, and the Pelicans took overtime 16-9 to win 120-113. It is win number four in a row, and it avenges the 119-120 loss to this same Jazz team on Oct. 23.

The Third Quarter

Utah poured in 43 in the third after scoring only 13 in the second, and that swing almost cost New Orleans the night. The Pelicans came back with 34 in the fourth to force overtime. Keyonte George did the damage for the Jazz with 39 points and 9 assists in 44 minutes. Lauri Markkanen added 21 points and 10 rebounds but finished minus-11.

Who Earned It

Dejounte Murray gets the top grade: 20 points, 8 rebounds, 4 steals, a perfect 11-for-11 at the line and a plus-17 across 45 minutes. Four turnovers keep it from perfect. Herbert Jones posted the night's best mark at plus-23 in 37 minutes. Derik Queen gets a B for 20 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists, though he needed 21 shots to get there. Zion Williamson scored 23 and went 11-for-13 at the line, but he made just 6 of 14 from the field. Karlo Matkovic was minus-9 in 21 minutes, and Bennedict Mathurin was minus-10 in 15.

Bench Delivered

Saddiq Bey scored 22 on 9-for-14 shooting off the bench. Trendon Watford added 7 and finished plus-7 in 20 minutes. The reserves outscored the starters' 69 with 51 of their own, and Bey, Queen and Watford were all on the floor with Murray and Mathurin at the finish.

What Changes

At 4-4 the Pelicans are 11th, half a game behind the 10th-place Mavericks and 1.5 behind sixth-place San Antonio. Two days of rest follow before the Timberwolves on Nov. 6 in the Emirates NBA Cup. Trey Murphy has an estimated return of that same date, and Yves Missi of Nov. 8 at the Clippers. The Warriors come next, and the road gets harder from here.
