Aday Mara, a 21-year-old rookie center, has played 12.2 minutes a night in two games, finishing efficiently and protecting the rim in small doses. The Thunder do not need more from him than clean, low-mistake minutes behind Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein, and the defense is where he has to improve.

What the small sample shows

Mara has averaged 4.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, 1.0 blocks and 0.5 assists in 12.2 minutes, with one turnover a night. He shot 57.1% from the field and 50.0% at the line, and he has not attempted a three. His usage is 16.1%, his rebound percentage 10.2% and his assist percentage 5.9%, which describes a finisher who takes what the offense gives him. The number that stands out is defensive rating: 103.9 for Mara against 95.9 for the team. His offensive rating of 103.8 is also well short of the team's 108.2. Two games prove little, but the gap sits on the defensive end, and that is where a center is supposed to earn his minutes.

Where he fits in the rotation

Holmgren leads the bigs at 29.2 minutes and Hartenstein follows at 20.1. Thomas Sorber, the other rookie center, is out with a right knee issue and is estimated back on 2026-10-26. Mara is not on the injury report. Thunderous Intentions' Maxwell Ogden wrote that his rookie role is coming into focus, and the minutes so far point the same direction: short, specific stretches rather than a nightly workload. There are no lineup numbers for him yet, so nobody can say which five-man groups work with him on the floor. That is the next thing to track as Sorber's return changes the pecking order among the young bigs.

Contract and the verdict

Mara earns $5.8M this season, then $6.1M, $6.4M and $8.8M through 2029-30. With payroll at $214.8M, above the first apron, a rookie-scale center who can hold a rotation spot is real value. The verdict is narrow. He needs to be a dependable backup who finishes at the rim, rebounds near his 10.2% rate and brings his defensive numbers closer to the team's. If he does that, the Thunder get a useful big on a modest deal. If he does not, the contract is small enough that nothing is lost. Either way, this season is about proving the floor, not the ceiling.
