Oklahoma City is 4-1 and fifth in the West, but the 120-96 loss in Dallas showed how little the bench can carry right now. The payroll and draft sheet explain why the answer has to come from inside the building.

A Record Ahead of Itself
At 4-1 the Thunder project to 66-16 and sit two games clear of 11th. That is a real cushion built during a stretch when Jalen Williams, Cason Wallace and Alex Caruso all went down. It does not prove the pace will hold. The margin over the last 10 games is +2.0 per game, much thinner than the season as a whole, and the next five run through Houston, Cleveland twice and Memphis.
Nineteen From the Bench
In Dallas the starters scored 77 and the reserves 19. The Thunder managed 15 points in the fourth quarter, and the group that played the last five minutes was Aday Mara, Bennett Stirtz, Brooks Barnhizer, Jared McCain and Josh Dix. Mitchell's 29 on 12-20 shooting came with a +4, one of only two positive marks on the team. One blowout does not settle the rookies' value. Mara had two blocks in 21 minutes. It does show that the margin for error now runs through Mitchell and Gilgeous-Alexander.
Money Spent, Picks Constrained
The payroll is $214.8M, past its first-apron threshold and over the $200.4M tax line. Williams and Chet Holmgren each earn $41.5M and Gilgeous-Alexander $40.8M. Williams and Wallace are both listed with a projected return of March 2, 2027, and ESPN reported that Williams had surgery and will be reevaluated before the season ends. The 2027 and 2028 firsts are swaps, so the clean trade chips are the 2029 and 2030 firsts. That favors patience. Holmgren's move off the out list, with October 31 as his projected return, matters more than any outside move.
Is Jalen Williams out for the season?
He is listed out with a projected return of March 2, 2027. ESPN reported that he had surgery and will be reevaluated before the season ends.
Will Chet Holmgren play against the Rockets?
His status improved from out on October 29, and his projected return is October 31, the date of the Houston game. He has not been confirmed as available.
