Ausar Thompson is out for Sunday's game at Philadelphia with a right ankle issue, a downgrade from day-to-day. The Pistons will be without both Thompson and Jalen Duren, who is out with a right hamstring issue.
What happened
Thompson was ruled out Sunday at 6:23 PM ET, about an hour before the Pistons' game at the 76ers. He had been day-to-day. The injury report lists the issue as a right ankle problem. Hunter Patterson of The Athletic reported that Thompson (ankle) is out for the game against Philadelphia. The issue first appeared Friday, Oct. 23, when he was day-to-day with an undisclosed injury. On Saturday, Oct. 24, the report listed him as day-to-day with the right ankle. Sunday's move to out is the first time he has been ruled out this season. The report gives an expected return date of Oct. 27.
What it means for the Pistons
Detroit is 2-0, holds the second seed and carries a two-game winning streak into Philadelphia. Thompson has played in both wins. He averages 26.3 minutes, 7.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists. The Pistons have not played a game without him, so there is no record to cite. Duren is also out with a right hamstring issue, which removes two rotation players at once. Cade Cunningham leads the team in minutes at 32.6 per game and scores 19.0. Duncan Robinson (27.6 minutes) and John Collins (27.4) follow. Paul Reed averages 21.5 minutes. Kevin Huerter, Isaiah Joe and Daniss Jenkins each average between 18.8 and 19.1 minutes. Detroit has not announced who starts in his place.
What to watch
The next injury report will show whether Thompson's ankle improves. The report lists Oct. 27 as his expected return date. Detroit has not said whether he will play that day. Duren's hamstring is the other status to track, since the Pistons are thin with both out. Sunday's game at Philadelphia tips at 7:30 PM ET. The Pistons will try to stay unbeaten at 3-0 without two rotation players.
