Toronto carries $201.2M in salary against a $200.4M luxury tax line, and Kawhi Leonard's $50.3M deal sits idle until an estimated November 23 return. The aprons sit at $209.0M and $221.7M, so there is little room to add, and the bigger decisions are on next season's books.

Just Over the Line
Four contracts carry this payroll: Leonard at $50.3M, Scottie Barnes at $41.8M, Immanuel Quickley at $32.5M and Barrett at $29.6M. Jakob Poeltl adds $19.5M with a player option. The $165.0M salary cap is no longer relevant to this team. The relevant line is the first apron at $209.0M, and Toronto is still under it, so the front office can operate, but every added dollar is taxed. The small decisions matter too. Trayce Jackson-Davis at $2.4M and Jamal Shead at $2.3M are both listed with team options, and Shead has logged 11 more minutes a night with a teammate out. The sheet shows him at $7.4M in 2027-28, still cheap for a starter's workload.
Next Summer's Books
The 2027-28 commitments already include Leonard at $56.1M, Barnes at $44.8M, Quickley at $32.5M and Poeltl at $27.3M. Barrett is not on that list, and neither are Kyle Anderson, Jamison Battle or Jackson-Davis. Barrett is averaging 21.0 points but shooting 9.1 percent from three. Hoops Rumors reported September 29 that extension talks weren't serious, and no outlet has reported progress since. Poeltl's raise is the harder number to justify on 3.0 points in 22.6 minutes, and Raptors Rapture wrote that the 2-1 start has not eased concerns about him. The cheapest value on the sheet is young. Hoops Rumors reported that Toronto picked up 2027-28 options on Ja'Kobe Walter and Collin Murray-Boyles, now listed at $5.9M and $7.0M. Walter is playing 33.7 minutes a night over his last five games.
Picks as Currency
Toronto owns its 2028, 2029 and 2030 firsts, holds a swap on its 2027 first, and owes its 2030 second to the Clippers. That is a full set of trade capital for a team this close to the aprons. Josh Lewenberg of TSN wrote that the Raptors believed they could survive the games Leonard would miss, which is why they accepted the risk of trading for him again. The next five games, two against a depleted Orlando and then a Western trip, will test that belief. If it fails, the flexibility is in Barrett's expiring money and those picks, not in cap space.
Are the Raptors over the luxury tax in 2026-27?
Yes. Their $201.2M payroll is above the $200.4M luxury tax line but still below the first apron at $209.0M.
Is RJ Barrett's contract expiring?
Barrett earns $29.6M this season and has no salary on the 2027-28 sheet. Hoops Rumors reported in September that extension talks weren't serious, and no progress has been reported since.
