Kawhi's Raise and Barrett's Final Year Frame Toronto's Cap Picture

A $201.2M payroll sits just past the tax line, and Barrett's deal and a Poeltl decision shape what comes next.

Toronto opens against Chicago tonight with a $201.2M payroll, just above the $200.4M luxury tax line. There is still room below the $209.0M first apron, but not much, and the decisions that matter most come next summer.

Four Deals, One Ceiling

The top of the sheet is heavy. Leonard at $50.3M, Barnes at $41.8M, Quickley at $32.5M and Barrett at $29.6M put Toronto far beyond the $165.0M salary cap before Jakob Poeltl's $19.5M player option is counted. That makes the Raptors a tax team but not an apron team. The first apron sits at $209.0M and the second at $221.7M, and staying under both leaves more trade and roster tools available. The cheap end of the roster carries real weight. Murray-Boyles at $6.6M, Allen Graves at $4.1M and Walter at $3.8M are rotation-level contributors on rookie-scale money, and Shead's $2.3M team option is one of the best values on the books.

What Leaves, What Grows

Barrett has no salary listed for 2027-28, and neither do Kyle Anderson, Trayce Jackson-Davis or Jamison Battle. Hoopsrumors reported on September 29 that Barrett's extension talks weren't serious, and no outlet has reported progress since. The numbers that stay keep climbing. Leonard rises to $56.1M, Barnes to $44.8M, and Poeltl's figure jumps from $19.5M to $27.3M. Shead goes from $2.3M to $7.4M. Hoopsrumors and RealGM both reported on October 20 that Toronto picked up 2027-28 options on Murray-Boyles and Walter, listed at $7.0M and $5.9M. Locking in two young pieces at those prices is the cleanest move Toronto has made this fall.

Picks as Currency

Toronto owns its first-round picks in 2028, 2029 and 2030, along with its seconds in 2027, 2028 and 2029. The 2027 first is a swap, and the 2030 second belongs to the Clippers. Those firsts are the real currency. If this group, which went 46-36 last season, needs one more piece at the deadline, Barrett's expiring $29.6M is the obvious salary to match, and those picks are the sweetener. The limit is the apron. Any deal that adds salary pushes the payroll closer to $209.0M, so the moves that make sense are the ones that keep the numbers balanced.

Are the Raptors over the luxury tax in 2026-27?

Yes. Their payroll is $201.2M against a $200.4M tax line, which still keeps them below the $209.0M first apron.

When does RJ Barrett's contract come off the books?

His $29.6M salary runs through this season, and no salary is listed for him in 2027-28. Hoopsrumors reported on September 29 that extension talks weren't serious.
