With Leonard Out, Jamal Shead Is Being Asked to Finish Games

Toronto's 24-year-old guard has gone from bench organizer to closer. His shot now has to catch up to the job.

In the last five minutes against Orlando, Darko Rajakovic had Jamal Shead on the floor with Barrett, Ja'Kobe Walter, Jamison Battle and Murray-Boyles, and Shead was still out there at the final horn. Kawhi Leonard is sidelined until an estimated November 23, and Shead's role has grown faster than his jumper.

A Starter's Workload

Over the last three games, with a teammate out, Shead has played 11 more minutes per game than before. For a backup guard that is a different job. Across five games last season he averaged 21.4 minutes, 5.0 assists and 1.2 steals against 2.2 turnovers. His 28.4 percent assist rate on a 15.0 percent usage rate tells you how he plays: he moves the ball to someone else and rarely looks for his own shot. That suits this roster. Scottie Barnes took 34 shots against the Magic, and Barrett and Immanuel Quickley both need touches. A guard who organizes the floor without taking possessions away from them has real value.

The Missing Jumper

The shooting is the concern. Shead hit 30.4 percent from the field and 12.5 percent from three on 1.6 attempts per game, for a true shooting mark of 46.0 percent. Defenses can sag off a guard who shoots like that and crowd Barnes on his drives, which works against the very player Shead is supposed to free up. The one hopeful sign is his 91.7 percent at the free throw line. Five games is a small sample in both directions, but the gap between his touch at the line and his touch from the floor is the clearest thing in his line.

What He Needs to Be

The lineups Shead played in were good. Toronto scored 116.1 points per 100 possessions and allowed 109.4 with him on the floor, a net of plus-6.6, though the team's overall defensive rating of 103.9 was better still. He is not on the injury report, and he is cheap: $2.3 million this season on a team option, then $7.4 million, $8.0 million and $8.6 million through 2029-30. On a payroll of $201.2 million, already over the $200.4 million tax line, a rotation guard at that price matters. The verdict is simple. Until Leonard returns, Shead does not need to score. He needs to keep his turnovers where they are, keep defending, and take his open threes often enough that teams stop leaving him alone. The four-game road trip starts November 1 against a Lakers team led by Luka Doncic, who averaged 36.2 points. Every game on that trip will test how good Shead's defense really is.

Why is Jamal Shead playing more for the Raptors?

With a teammate out, Shead has played 11 more minutes per game over the last three games, and he was part of Toronto's closing group against Orlando. Kawhi Leonard is out with an estimated return of November 23.

What is Jamal Shead's contract with the Raptors?

He earns $2.3 million in 2026-27 on a team option. He is then due $7.4 million in 2027-28, $8.0 million in 2028-29 and $8.6 million in 2029-30.
