Over the Tax, Under the Aprons: Toronto's Narrow Money Bet on Leonard

A $201.2M payroll sits just above the tax line while the biggest salary on the books waits for his knee to heal.

Toronto heads to Los Angeles with Scottie Barnes coming off a 41-point night and a payroll that has already crossed the luxury tax line. The money sits in a narrow band: above the tax, below both aprons, and built around a star who has played two games.

A Thin Margin Over

Toronto's payroll stands at $201.2M against a $200.4M tax line and a $165.0M salary cap. The first apron is at $209.0M and the second at $221.7M, so the Raptors pay tax without the restrictions that come with the aprons. Four deals carry the sheet: Kawhi Leonard at $50.3M, Barnes at $41.8M, Immanuel Quickley at $32.5M and RJ Barrett at $29.6M. Leonard, the largest of them, is sidelined by a left knee issue and not expected back before November 23. For now Toronto is paying tax-level money for a roster that is winning without him.

Next Summer's Ledger

Leonard rises to $56.1M in 2027-28 and Barnes to $44.8M, while Quickley holds at $32.5M. Barrett does not appear on next season's sheet, and Hoopsrumors reported September 29 that extension talks were not serious. Jakob Poeltl carries a player option on his $19.5M and is listed at $27.3M for 2027-28, with no new word on an extension. Jamal Shead's $2.3M and Trayce Jackson-Davis's $2.4M are team options; Shead is listed at $7.4M next season. Hoopsrumors reported October 20 that Toronto picked up 2027-28 options on Collin Murray-Boyles and Ja'Kobe Walter, now set at $7.0M and $5.9M. Barrett's decision is the one that moves the line.

Cheap Deals, Heavy Minutes

The real flexibility is in the low end of the payroll. Walter, at $3.8M, has gone from 21.5 to 33.7 minutes a night over his last five games. Shead is playing 11 more minutes a night with a teammate out. Murray-Boyles, at $6.6M, scored 15 on 7-of-10 shooting against Orlando. Those contracts let a taxpaying team stay deep. On picks, the 2027 first is a swap, Toronto owns its firsts from 2028 through 2030, and the 2030 second goes to the Clippers. That is enough draft capital to trade if Webster's front office decides the tax bill needs a winner this season.

Are the Raptors paying the luxury tax in 2026-27?

Yes. Toronto's payroll is $201.2M, above the $200.4M tax line and below the first apron at $209.0M.

Is RJ Barrett under contract for 2027-28?

He has no salary on Toronto's 2027-28 sheet. Hoopsrumors reported September 29 that extension talks were not serious, and nothing has been reported since.
