Edwards, McDaniels, Freeman: Which Wolves Reports Hold Up Under the Apron

Five October reports on Minnesota, weighed by source and score against a $215.3M payroll.

Minnesota heads to San Antonio at 4-2, seventh in the conference, with Edwards sidelined and a payroll sitting above the first apron. The reports that shaped October deserve a sober sort before the next one lands.

The ones that hold

The sturdiest item is the Hoops Rumors report of October 30, citing Jon Krawczynski, that Minnesota will decline Cody Williams' fourth-year option. It carries a confidence score of 49 and remains open. Krawczynski wrote that the club has liked Williams so far and that the call is about finances, with more than $6 million due next season. The October 27 report, also via Krawczynski, that Minnesota is re-signing Enrique Freeman to a two-way deal scores 46 and is open, though Freeman now appears on the roster at No. 25. That is a neat turn: Freeman was among the five players released after the October 17 Hoops Rumors report of five waivers, the only item on this list marked as moved, at 45.

Surgery and a handshake

Hoops Rumors reported on October 27 that Edwards needs knee surgery and could miss two months, a report scored at 41 and still open. The injury report points the same way: Edwards is listed as out, with an estimated return of December 21. The thinnest item is the October 20 Hoops Rumors report of a one-year extension for Jaden McDaniels, scored at 31. No salary or other terms have followed. Until they do, it is a headline, not a contract. McDaniels has kept playing like a core piece regardless, finishing plus-22 in 33 minutes against the Clippers.

What the apron allows

The cap sheet is the real filter. Payroll stands at $215.3 million, above the $209.0 million first apron and well past the $200.4 million tax line, with Edwards at $48.9 million, LaMelo Ball at $40.8 million, Rudy Gobert at $36.5 million and McDaniels at $26.2 million. The 2027 and 2028 firsts are swaps and the 2029 and 2030 firsts carry protections, so there is little to offer in a trade. That frame fits the financial reasoning Krawczynski gave on Williams, and it argues against reading the Edwards absence as a reason to shop. For now, the answer is internal: Ball scored 24 and Bones Hyland added 19 off the bench in the 26-point win over the Clippers, and Gobert, day-to-day with a back issue, carries an estimated return of tonight.

Are the Timberwolves declining Cody Williams' option?

Hoops Rumors, citing Jon Krawczynski, reported on October 30 that they will decline it. Krawczynski described the decision as financial, with more than $6 million due next season.

When will Anthony Edwards return for the Timberwolves?

He is listed as out, with an estimated return of December 21. Hoops Rumors reported on October 27 that he needs knee surgery and could miss two months.
