The Timberwolves' Real Rumor Is a Cap Sheet, Not a Trade

This week's reports are camp paperwork and one open line on staff, not a push toward a deal.

Minnesota has won two of three preseason games with the roster that broke camp still intact. The reports filed over the past three weeks confirm that quiet, rather than hint at what might change it.

What's Actually Confirmed

The verified moves are camp-level housekeeping. Jules Bernard signed a camp deal on September 18, the same day David Stockton signed with the Suns. A week later, on September 25, Minnesota was grouped with the Raptors, Spurs and Kings in a round of camp-roster additions. And a September 26 report that KJ Martin and Drew Timme are competing for one roster spot is itself confirmed true — the competition is real, even if nobody has said who wins it. Both men are still on the roster three preseason games later.

Two Lines Still Open

Two reports from the same stretch carry low confidence scores and remain open. One, filed September 26, said the Timberwolves updated their basketball staff; it carries a confidence score of 25, with no word yet on who left or arrived. The other, filed September 20 at a confidence of 20, said Minnesota waived a player listed only as Thompson. No player by that name appears on the current roster, and the report has not been upgraded since.

Why the Math Says Wait

Any rumor involving outside salary runs into the same wall. Minnesota's payroll sits at $215.3 million, above both the $200.4 million luxury tax line and the first apron, with Edwards' $48.9 million, LaMelo Ball's $40.8 million, Rudy Gobert's $36.5 million and Jaden McDaniels' $26.2 million accounting for most of it. A roster already over the apron does not add money by report. It subtracts it, or it waits for one of these open threads to resolve on its own.

Did the Timberwolves waive a player this preseason?

A report dated September 20, carrying a confidence score of 20, said Minnesota waived a player listed as Thompson. It remains open and unconfirmed, and no such player is on the current roster.

Has the Drew Timme vs. KJ Martin roster battle been decided?

Not yet. A September 26 report confirmed the two are competing for one spot, and both are still on the roster three preseason games later.
