The Porzingis Trade Talk Is Thin, and the Cap Sheet Makes It Thinner

Golden State's only live rumor concerns a $19.5M big man who has not played this season, and neither the reporting nor the payroll says a deal is close.

By the Warriors Nightly Desk · Thursday, October 29

HoopsRumors reported on October 21 that the Warriors are exploring trade avenues for Kristaps Porzingis, and a day later that the Bucks are among the teams contacted. Both reports carry a confidence score of 36 and remain open, so they are something to watch, not a move to plan around.

What has actually been reported?

Three items concern Porzingis. HoopsRumors reported on October 14 that he was out indefinitely due to health issues, a report scored at 28. On October 21 it reported that Golden State was exploring trade avenues for him, and on October 22 that Milwaukee was among the teams contacted. Both of those score 36 and are still open. Brett Siegel's October 24 report also touches Porzingis and, at 44, is the highest-scored open item in the file. The firmest facts are about his health, not a deal. His listing changed from Undisclosed to illness on October 21, and his listed return date is December 1.

Can the cap sheet absorb a deal?

Golden State carries $219.8M in payroll, above the first apron and past the $200.4M luxury tax line, which limits what the front office can do in trades. Porzingis's $19.5M is the fourth-largest contract on the books, behind Curry, Jimmy Butler and Green. A buyer has to send back money the Warriors can fit, for a player nobody has seen this season. The draft picks help only so much. The Warriors own their firsts in 2027, 2028 and 2029, but the 2030 first is protected to Memphis and the 2029 second goes to Brooklyn.

Does the rotation need him now?

Not urgently. Yaxel Lendeborg is carrying the frontcourt at 22.6 points and 9.2 rebounds over five games, and he scored 26 in the 119-114 win at Minnesota, though his seven turnovers there showed how much he is being asked to do. Al Horford, 40, closed the last five minutes beside him. The bigger strain is elsewhere. Butler is listed out until January 2, and Moses Moody shares Porzingis's December 1 date. Trading a sidelined big man would not get any of those players back sooner.

What is noise?

Most of the rest has already been settled by events. Dalton Johnson's October 19 report that Kerr called Curry "fine" after a practice scare was answered when Curry scored 44 in Minnesota. The plan to waive Dalen Terry was confirmed, and Terry and Tyler Burton both left on October 18. Podziemski's extension was agreed on October 10, but no salary figures have been reported. So exploring Porzingis trades is not the same as trading him. Until another team is named or he plays, the likeliest outcome is that he is still a Warrior on December 1.

Are the Warriors trading Kristaps Porzingis?

No deal has been reported. HoopsRumors reported in October that Golden State is exploring trade avenues and has contacted the Bucks, and both reports remain open.

When is Kristaps Porzingis expected back?

He is listed Out with an illness, and his listed return date is December 1, 2026.
