Jamal Cain's Minutes Are Up 10 a Night for the Magic
With a teammate out, Cain is logging bigger minutes for Orlando, but his scoring hasn't caught up yet.
Jamal Cain is playing 22.8 minutes a game over his last three outings for the Magic, up 10 minutes a night from his season average of 13. The most recent of those three games was May 3, 2026. The jump came with a teammate out of the lineup.
Cain's season numbers, over 47 games in 2025-26, are 5.3 points and 13 minutes a night. In the last three games, with the extra playing time, he is averaging 4.3 points, which is lower than his season mark. The Magic are giving him more time on the floor, and he has not scored more because of it.
That gap matters. A bigger role that does not come with more production is a fragile role. If Cain's shot totals and efficiency in the extra minutes do not improve, coaches have less reason to keep him at 22.8 minutes once the rotation is back at full strength.
Whether this holds depends on two things. First, whether the teammate who is out returns to the lineup soon. If he does, Cain's minutes likely slide back toward his season average of 13. Second, whether Cain's scoring rises to match his new workload. Three games and 4.3 points a night is a small sample, and it has moved in the wrong direction so far. For the increase to stick past the teammate's absence, Cain needs to start producing more than 5.3 points a game, not less.
For now, treat the extra 10 minutes a night as tied to a specific absence on Orlando's roster, not as a settled change in Cain's standing with the team.
