Okongwu's Deal, Dort's Role and the Rookies Drive Opener-Week Talk

The beat spent opener week on Okongwu's contract, Dort's position and two young players pushing for minutes.

Locked On Hawks and Soaring Down South both flagged Onyeka Okongwu's closed extension window, while Soaring Down South also debated Luguentz Dort's position and whether Kingston Flemings and Asa Newell can crack the rotation. Atlanta's own numbers explain why each question matters, though none of them settles anything yet.

Okongwu Plays On Unextended

Locked On Hawks host Brad Rowland reported that Okongwu's extension window closed at the 11:59 pm ET deadline with two seasons left on his current deal, and Soaring Down South's Garrett Brown wrote that the missed deadline raises major questions. The contract figures show what is at stake. Okongwu earns $16.1M, fifth on the payroll behind Jalen Johnson's $30.0M, Dyson Daniels' $25.0M, CJ McCollum's $21.0M and Dort's $18.2M. Last season he averaged 15.2 points and 7.6 rebounds, shot 37.6 percent from three, and anchored the McCollum-led five that went +20.3 in 391 minutes. No report says talks broke down or that a trade is coming. The only confirmed fact is that he did not sign.

Dort's Option, Dort's Spot

Soaring Down South's Michael Kobrinsky wrote that the Hawks face a tradeoff with Dort at an unconventional position. The numbers explain why. Dort carries an $18.2M team option and averaged 8.3 points in 26.8 minutes last season on 34.4 percent from three, the lowest scoring average among Atlanta's eight leading players. The roster lists him as a guard, so any move to a different spot is the outlet's analysis, not an announced decision. With payroll at $198.5M and the luxury tax starting at $200.4M, that option is the most flexible money Atlanta has.

Rookies Knock, Gueye Waits

Soaring Down South's Ian Kearney argued that Kingston Flemings' strong preseason could threaten the starting five, and that Asa Newell's breakout could be delayed as the rotation settles. The preseason backs the hype in part: Newell scored 16 and Flemings 15 in the October 8 win over the Spurs. But that was an exhibition, and the best five from last season is still on the roster. Minutes in the frontcourt have opened up. Rowland's first injury report of the season ruled out Mouhamed Gueye with a foot fracture, estimated back 2026-11-20, and Henri Veesaar with a torn right ACL. It listed Jalen Wilson, RayJ Dennis and Keshon Gilbert as questionable with the G League designation. Off the court, Hawks.com announced Prime Video as the team's exclusive in-market streaming home, and Rowland noted that the TV broadcasts stay on ANF and Peachtree Sports Network.

Did Onyeka Okongwu sign a contract extension with the Hawks?

No. Locked On Hawks reported that his extension window closed at the deadline, which leaves two seasons on his current $16.1M deal.

When will Mouhamed Gueye return for the Hawks?

His estimated return date is November 20, 2026. He was ruled out of the opener in Orlando with a foot fracture.
