Is the Spurs' Roster Too Deep, or Exactly Deep Enough?

San Antonio enters training camp with the deepest roster of the Wembanyama era, a $198.3 million payroll, and six rookies who have yet to play a game that counts. The question hanging over the season is whether that depth becomes a weapon or a puzzle Johnson can't solve.

How deep did the roster just get?

Miles Barnstable joined September 22 on a camp deal, per Paul Garcia's report for The Spot Up Shot, pushing the roster to 20 for camp. Jayden Nunn joined September 18. Neither move came with reported salary terms, adding depth to a roster that already runs six rookies deep: Dylan Harper, Carter Bryant, David Jones Garcia, Ja'Kobi Gillespie, Taelon Peter and Jayden Quaintance.

What does the payroll allow?

San Antonio carries a $198.3 million payroll against a $165.0 million cap; the team sits above that cap and below the $200.4 million tax threshold. De'Aaron Fox ($49.8M), Devin Vassell ($27.0M), Keldon Johnson ($17.5M), Victor Wembanyama ($16.9M) and Tobias Harris ($15.0M) are the five largest deals. San Antonio owes its 2027 first-round pick to Sacramento and holds swaps in 2027, 2028 and 2030.

Can six rookies find real minutes?

Harper, Bryant, Jones Garcia, Gillespie, Peter and Quaintance are all on the roster, and none has played a game that counts. Jones Garcia is day-to-day with a right ankle issue, targeting an October 1 return; Quaintance is out with a right knee injury until roughly December 1. Their health alone will shape how much of that question camp can even answer.

Does the G League hire change the depth chart?

Chris Kent was named head coach of the Spurs' G League affiliate on September 12, and nothing reported since has connected that hire to how Mitch Johnson will split minutes on the main roster. Until that link is spelled out, the rookies' development path stays as unclear as their playing time.

Is the veteran core still built for a title run?

Wembanyama returns with Fox, Vassell, Harris, Barnes, Johnson and Castle, the same group that went 62-20 last season and reached the NBA Finals before losing to the Knicks in five games. That group has yet to share a court in a game that counts this season, so the fit questions from last spring are still open, not settled.
