Rumor Check: Davis In and Out, While Trade Chatter Stays Empty

A low-confidence signing becomes a reported waiver, and the Harper-Vassell notes add names, not a deal.

R.J. Davis went from a confidence-24 report to a game appearance to a reported release inside three weeks. Everything else labeled a rumor around the Spurs this month is still just a list of names.

What actually happened with R.J. Davis?

A September 25 report said the Spurs signed Davis to set their camp roster, filed with a confidence score of 24 and marked open, not confirmed. He played 15 minutes against Utah on October 12, scoring 5 points with 2 assists. The Spot Up Shot reported October 13 that the Spurs have waived him off an Exhibit 10 contract. San Antonio has not confirmed it.

Why would the Spurs cut someone who just played?

Exhibit 10 deals exist to get cut. They let a team audition a player in camp and preseason games without guaranteeing a roster spot, and Davis's release fits a wave of similar moves: the same September week brought confirmed camp-roster trims in Toronto, Sacramento, Minnesota, Utah, Denver, Portland, Boston and Cleveland. None of those reports carried any detail beyond the transaction itself.

Does the salary-cap picture make this move matter?

Barely. San Antonio's payroll sits at $198.3M, about $2.1M under the luxury tax line of $200.4M. An Exhibit 10 waiver carries no guaranteed money and does not move that number. This is paperwork, not a cap decision, and it says nothing about how the front office plans to use its remaining room.

Is there a real trade rumor involving Harper or Vassell?

No specific proposal has surfaced. An October 10 notes column grouped Dylan Harper's and Devin Vassell's names with Fred VanVleet and the Mavericks, but it described no framework, no package and no timeline. A list of names in one sentence is not a deal, and nothing since has added detail to it.

Which of these reports should fans actually trust?

Only one of the five Spurs-tagged transaction reports carried a confidence score at all, and it was the Davis signing: 24, left open rather than confirmed. The other four were marked confirmed, but each logged a roster move, not a projection. Treat the open one with real skepticism and the confirmed ones as recordkeeping, not forecasting.

The verdictThe one rumor with a number attached this month, the Davis signing, already looks shaky three weeks later, and the two names fans keep pairing with trade talk haven't appeared in any report describing an actual deal.
Did the Spurs really waive R.J. Davis?

The Spot Up Shot reported it on October 13, but San Antonio has not confirmed the move. Davis had played 15 minutes against Utah two days earlier.

Are the Harper and Vassell trade rumors real?

No. The only report connecting their names to a deal was a notes column pairing them with Fred VanVleet and the Mavericks, with no framework attached.
